Despite some common assumptions, we do not need to make the most power possible at every RPM vs Load point in our tuning tables. There is no black and white answer to what cells you MUST tune for MBT, but there are some places where logically we're not going to require it, such as part throttle cruise areas of our map as Andre here explains.

Will MBT on all cells in a range feel smooth, or do some cells usually need to be detuned as not to be jerky?

Aftermaket or stand alone tune is not as polished as factory tune for most of the time, many factory ecu have mbt table already, they know how close we are from mbt especially in ethannol
