*I've been curious about this for a while but never been motivated enough to go looking thanks for saving me time* 😁

Horsepower = torque * RPM/5252
So if you have 100 lb-ft if torque at 5252 RPM your car will make 100 horsepower, however if your car can Rev to 7, 878 RPM your car will make 150 horsepower.

Imagine two people were driving at 30 mph and then started racing each other with the exact same car except one engine had 200 horsepower and 100 lb-ft of torque and the other had 100 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque. If both cars were to accelerate as fast as they could in the same gear, the car with more torque would accelerate faster, however if the car with more horsepower were to shift into a gear that is at least two times as aggressive (which it can do because horsepower=torque*rpm/5252 so if the horsepower is bigger but the torque is smaller the RPM must be much bigger) the car with more power will be making more torque at the wheels and so will accelerate faster.

Engineering Explained did a number of excellent videos on this topic, especially the one he talks about what the best RPM to shift at is.

It's getting harder and harder to find performance specs. Everything is centering around MPG, CO² emissions, safety ratings ECT. It took me forever to figure out the 2022 Civic SI is nearly as fast as an early 90s base 💩 box.

Fun video. It is incorrect but still fun. The point where torque and HP are equal is a meaningless point. That point is totally arbitrary based on the units of measure you are using. You get MANY other things wrong in the video too.

so TL:DR Gear ratios are more important when all else is equal and your better off dropping cash on a better gearbox and drivetrain than strapping extra stuff to your engine and going for just straight raw BHP...

heres an interesting question, is it possible to tune/upgrade the internals of a Automatic gearbox for better performance and reducing shifting lag on older automatics?

I had my 2018 2.0 zb turbo dyno tuned a little while back, had basic bolt ons and ended up with 176kw atw and 665nm torque. It has a 9 speed auto aswel but it sounds like quite alot of torque. I have the dyno video and print out aswel.

There should be a part 2, Why does bensin feel faster than diesel even tho a diesel has way more NM force but same HP?

I want the power earlier than later, fun & snappy within the legal speed limits so u can use it...of course, lol!!

What of the car had the same hp and same torque would it be any different then a car with more hp or torque

For me, torque is the better of the two. You can have all the power in the world, but if you can't put it to the ground, then it's useless.

What I'm wondering is if a car has 1, 000 HP but 100 torque, will it be as if it only has 100 HP?
Edit: Thank you for the responses. I've learned a lot.

Sadly, just the grunt. Living near a metropolitan area doesn't allow much speed build

Thank you so I've been looking forward to this because there's no youtube video on this! Thanks!!!

BTW peak horsepower is guess what, the peak. Your car isn't electric or a performance CVT. The honest whp of a car is the mean of 1st gear with traction and the next gear.
Don't ever flex your peak whp, you'll be humbled.

An even more accurate measure would be to find the mean of the means for all the gears you're going to use, but that's too long.
