Railroad fact #5: Sullivan's Island used to have a small but bustling and VERY popular streetcar network. It was vital for people willing to get to the ferries and it was overall a pleasant attraction to the island. It was founded in 1875 and used horses to power the trolley cars until the 1890s when electric traction became popular. By this point, they have borrowed a few streetcars from Charleston's already massive urban streetcar network and used these cars as the main source of power for the island's dinky little railway. Unfortunately, due to ferries no longer serving this island, the island saw no use for this railway, thus causing the railway to discontinue operations in 1927. This little island rather has a unique history when it comes to railroads. I'm not sure if any remains are left.
