I was at Pompeii a few years ago. Seeing the husks of the human bodies covered in ash was a haunting experience

I’m surprised you didn’t even mention the eruption of the Toba Caldera Complex! It was apparently 12 times more powerful than the volcano that made #1 on the list, and it nearly drove humanity to extinction!

The ancient supposed eruption of Krakatoa of ~535 caused the worst year in known human history. It separated Java from Sumatra and must have killed dozens of thousands of people of the region. It caused a harsh global volcanic winter (caused famines) which was shortly followed by Justinian plague (plagues and diseases are common outcomes of volcanic winters) which killed ~35 million people. So far it's the winner of the list, eclipsing even Tambora eruption.

Also surprised Laki eruption isn't mentioned. It's one of the deadliest eruptions in recent history (4/5 of population of Iceland and unknown numbers of deaths worldwide due to suffocating cloud over Europe and later famine and freezing due to volcanic winter)

From someone who lived through Mt. St. Helens in 1980, I understand why it didn't make the list. I didn't escape unscathed though.

Lesson to take away from this video. If a volcano that erupts near you has a pyroclastic flow heading towards you, you’re most likely shit out of luck.

I was in Pompeii in 2012 with some of my family and it was one of the scariest and surreal visits to a city I've ever witnessed.

Tambora should be nowhere but number #1. It has roughly three-four times the number of deaths as the second place holder, and is the largest eruption in history records

1783 - Laki - Iceland - 8 months of releasing incredible amounts of sulphuric gas - it is thought to have caused famine across Europe was harshly that it could be one of the unknown factors of the French Revolution - imagine a leader saying that because there is no bread "let them eat cake" in the context of a catastrophic volcanic eruption

So I’ve heard that the scale of the Tonga eruption was a VEI-6. The biggest since the Mt Pinatubo eruption
