The Most Epic GitHub Pull Request Of All Time

preview_player
Показать описание
A young developer made a pull request in one of Epic Game's repositories, and notified everyone in the EpicGames/developers group. There's just one problem though, this developers group contains literally everyone who has ever requested the source code to unreal engine, since the only purpose of this group is for Epic games to filter users, collect their github username/email, and force them to sign a tos before getting access to the code.

If a young dev like this is all it takes to overflood the inbox of everyone signed onto this github page then it is entirely Epic's fault for letting it be like this

I'll never understand how multi-billion dollar companies overlook small, simple things that could be done by one guy in a day. Like how Windows still doesn't have tabs in the file explorer.

Never blame a user for doing something they're allowed to do. That should be obvious to anybody interested in this sort of thing enough to even be on GitHub in the first place.

Trevoke was saying "LOCK IT DOWN" like he's the captain of the starship Enterprise stopping a warp core meltdown. As if the e-mail servers are gonna kill someone if they overload

Do you:
a) Blame GitHub for allowing groups to be hundreds of thousands of users and still have email notifications?
b) Blame epic for creating a group with hundreds of thousands of users and not disabling email notifications?
c) Burn Rohith at the stake?

Imagine people were to get fired for making a simple mistake. Nobody would ever be able to keep a job for longer than a year. That's essentially what this guy wants buy banning this developer.

This is certainly one of the GitHub Pull Requests ever made.

Imagine being so sensitive that a pull-request notification sends you on a huge tangent to get someone punished. I'm getting tons of BS notifications everyday from various sources and I don't have a meltdown every time.

This was indeed the most EPIC GitHub Pull Request. It was almost UNREAL.

So guy just did an equivalent of a @everyone ping on some bigger discord server and made people go apeshit angry except it's not a bunch of teenagers that don't get enough attention but actual grown up programmers?
Shit's wild.

This is probably the best storytelling I've seen in a while.

Honestly what shocks me the most is that this group has existed for many years, I've been in it for many years. Never has anyone tagged it, not even as a troll. The most amazing thing about computer science is that right now, nearly certainly, some large "exploit" exists that no one has used yet, or perhaps someone has but it hasn't been mass reported yet. Just think... whatever the next big security vulnerability that might be uncovered in a month or so is, it certainly exists *right now*... and simply hasn't been abused or flagged yet.

Reminds me of when I pinged 100K people in a discord server on a games launch day. They had a web api to send messages in the discord server when you report a bug so I went on their bug reports and thought maybe doing @everyone would ping everyone so I said something like "bugs be like @everyone" and oh boy did it work. They had to shut down the entire site alongside them trying so hard to keep their servers up because so many people were trying to log in to the game. Good times.

This is one of the biggest reasons why I'm scared to contribute to open source. Some people just go way too hard when you make a simple mistake.

This happens at my work all the time, just someone boomer trying to start a beer league or fundraiser emails all employees. Then of course everyone hits reply all to boot, its amazing!

“The Linux operating system is a pathway to many abilities some consider… based”

“Have you ever heard the comedy of developer Rohith Sreedharan the troll?”

When I read that comment from Trevoke, I just laughed from the gut. Sure there shouldn't have been a message thread started with 400k+ people but this dude is out here acting like he's about to be the cyber police over what looks like an honest mistake.

I hope Rohith learned something here though. Despite this not really being his fault, he's hopefully not going to be in the habit of spamming group tags in pull requests from here on out.
