Conversation with Dr. Claudia Ford: Spiritual Ecology - Remembering the Sacredness of all of Life

Dr. Claudia Ford is a professor and chair of the department of Environmental Studies at State University of New York, Potsdam. She is an African American elder and humanist, a scholar who has studied, written about and taught the issues of environmental philosophy from spiritual, ecological and cultural perspectives. She is devoted to imparting knowledge of how to raise human consciousness to get us through this transitional period of intense environmental and social crises. She has had a 50 year career in international development and women’s health spanning all continents. She is a midwife, teacher, and visual artist with four postgraduate degrees including her PhD in environmental studies.

Wow Ladies, everything you are talking about today is so so about for me, my heart and soul. Maybe I am generalizing, but I think as women, we are more atune to community. Hearing all of this isn't new to me at all. Our affinity to this is a remembering connectedness. All my life I've wanted to learn more about indigenous people from a very young age. It's a remembering. I am having a hard time expressing my feelings about this. Yes, we are all part of the whole. What a wonderful conversation. Listening to you talk about being a grandmother I can't help but weep a little...my own parents have sadly been the most heartbreakingly cold and uninterested grandparents to my children, and especially as we live in Italy, a country where intergenerational relationships are really valued, I can see how hard it is on them. I can't wait to read your book! I'm also trying to work out what to write my masters theory about, and listening to you both gives me confidence that the spiritual aspects of ecology are a valid topic to focus upon. What a perfect and profound analogy: Transition. I birthed three babies naturally. Prepared, was educated, had tools -breathing, focus, panting- to get me through. And faith. But still, every time, in transition I felt despair, hopelessness, it was impossible! I couldn’t do it! And yes, I was going to die. I had wonderful midwives. And remembered to surrender to the amazing, magical power of Mama Nature. And found more and more of my own power.
Oh Heather such a wonderful interview. Timely to my mood about the state of the world. The children! Eye (of my heart) to the land, to community, to the babies to come. Calling on Eris and Haumea and the star of the USA, Sirius. 💖🌟
