Went to Kumon from grade 2-11ish. I was actually getting ahead, not catching up, and I actually do endorse the "a little worksheet every day" style of learning for math (dodges younger me's death glare).
But also he's absolutely right. You are basically paying for extra homework since it's largely independent learning.

Kumon was like Chinese water drop torture. I started hating maths and started becoming mentally unable to do math after a point.
Grades started improving after my parents stopped that hell.

Idea to sell failure: sell yourself as somebody who will fail at stuff in front of others to make them look better. You wanna look smart in front of your crush? Beat me in a game of chess. Wanna look strong? Spot me at the gym while I fail to lift 10 pounds.

I will say.. Kumon did help me, basically permanently ahead of school so I never had to actually learn math in school

Kumon gave me PTSD, I was struggling in 8th grade Geometry, so what’d they teach me? Double digit addition! For. a. fkn. year. straight.

Omg and don’t get me started with the music! They played the same classical music playlist of like 5 songs over and over again while you tried to work. I hate the 5 of the most iconic pieces of classical music because of the memories it brings back.
