Loved my BMW 5 series but warranty expired and the headlight malfunctioned (adaptive headlights). Repair cost was $5, 400. Insane since the car was valued at $12, 000.

All luxury cars are more expensive to maintain compared to non luxury cars.
If you plan on owning, not leasing, and plan on owning for 100, 000+ miles then buy a Lexus.
If you plan on leasing or owning for 50, 000 miles or less, BMW is still a good bet. Fun to drive, luxurious, good looking, and reliable under 50k.

Great advice, Dave. The one thing I've learned over the years is that ALL German autos are very unforgiving if the maintenance is not done when required.

Do NOT use the stealership I mean the dealership for ANYTHING. I own an Audi, I take my A4 to a European Specialist which saves a lot of money. Alot of the dealership guys open up their own shops because they can make 3x the money and provide the same expertise.

These are reasons why I switched from owning a BMW...to leasing a BMW. Their lease rates are quite favorable when compared to other premium brands, I enjoy their products, they cover all the maintenance, and when 3 years and 45, 000 miles are not on the hook for repairs. That said, will I lease another? Not sure. I also own an 80s-era Diesel Mercedes...and I find myself increasingly attracted to the simplicity of such cars.

Y'all need to stop crying that they aren't reliable. Buy them low km, do not put any tunes or anything that will over push the limit of the engine and most importantly do your oil changes frequently ( every 8000-9000 km) not 12-15k km... I can also had to make sure the previous owner is a old man and not a kid that was always pushing it to the red line. Like guys this is just common sense 🤷

Some day I dreamt about the BMW, now I am happy to have 184hp Honda Civic and it so enjoyable for a car enthusiast:) ...and maintenance will not bankrupt you!

Bought a 2007 Z4 in 2011 with 97000km. Put another 40000 on over the next 7yrs. Outside of a new set of tires and oil changes, the only failure was an ignition coil. I wish I still had it. Just bought a 2 Series cabrio tho!😊

I must say BMW are expensive to maintain but it depends on which engine you go with I’ve had a lot experience on BMWs and so I’ve change my mindset of which one I would purchase so now I currently own a 328D and having a diesel BMW has been the best decision because this is so much more reliable and fuel efficient and breaks down less or you should go with an all electric BMW would be my next choice which would compare with the Tesla model three in the near future

I owned a 2013 BMW 3 from 2013-2019. The car was marvellous to drive. I felt safe on any roads. I only had a few hickups and the service costs weren’t that bad. I sold it in 2019 and bought a 2020 Mercedes C class with AMG style package. This car, although quick, is not as direct as the BMW. I also don’t like the rear tyres are bigger than the front ones. During the process I drove also the Lexus IS hybrid but I did not like it as it felt sedated and I didn’t like the droning sound of the CVT.

This is the reason so many people, including myself, only lease BMW's. Turn it in after 36K miles and the only big expense you'll have is tires.

Try owning a few corvette’s, they are money pits as well, any vehicle that pushes performance and technology is expensive to maintain.

Every car enthusiast knows that cars like BMW or Merc are expensive to by but also maintain because of many reasons one being the fact that those companies are very often "first timers", they bring inovations into the automotive industry and that requires expensive research but also that Hans and Franz that are engineers in those car companies aren`t your atverage payed citizens. They cost. So in the end it has to be payed. Also those interiors that we all like with that premium feel also costs. And maintenance - people are complaining about "high costs" but if you are regular then they are reasonalbe (considering all of the bove). It is interesting, it`s often like children have bought a car - there are available infos about reuglar maintenance prices, different part prices, common faults and prices one just has to read them. :-)
