The future UK–EU relationship – what do parliamentarians want?

Negotiations with the EU are far from over. The UK and the EU may or may not reach a deal by the end of the year, and key issues on state aid and fisheries are yet to be resolved.

Both sides also need to implement the Withdrawal Agreement in full. During the Article 50 negotiations, parliament played a prominent role in debating – and voting on – the shape of the UK’s exit from the EU. But MPs have largely been cut off from the future relationship negotiations.

In this event, we explored how MPs have tried to influence the future relationship negotiations and what they hope to see in the final settlement.

Panellists

Paul Blomfield MP, Labour Shadow Minister for Brexit and EU
Lord Lilley, Conservative Peer and member of the Lords EU Goods Sub-committee
Lord Ricketts, Chair of the Lords EU Security and Justice Sub-committee
Dr Philippa Whitford, SNP spokesperson for Europe

This event was chaired by Jill Rutter, Senior Fellow at the Institute for Government.

It's all opinions, nobody is referring to the rules and regulations. The Brexit government promised a lot butt there is not one that is possible. Oven ready deals, no border between NI and Irish Republic, no border checks, no paper work, vehicle recognition There are absolutely no up to date information on the .gov.uk website. Like Bob Hoskins said, "it's good to talk!"

Peter Lilley: stuck at "they need us more than we need them".

He completely misunderstand the fact that the EU is built on a number of legal principles and treaties it is not willing to sacrifice for the sake of the Conservative party.

If the US food standards were indeed higher than UK standards, how could this be true: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a part of the US government, states the following: "CDC estimates 48 million people get sick, 128, 000 are hospitalized, & 3, 000 die from foodborne diseases each year in the US" With 325m people living there, 48m per year is a lot.

I doubt an institution outside the EU could direct have access to the Schengen information system. I am sure this contradicts EU privacy rules.

Advice to Peter Lilley: Giving access to our databases to a country outside our jurisdiction is a matter of citizens' rights. The Five Eyes does not give the UK police the right to roam around in FBI or CIA or local police databases.

Somebody, please tell Peter Lilley that 0.5% of a lot is worth more than 3% of a small amount.

This video is out dated, The latest government stance is that the trade deal has collapsed and we will be ending up on a no deal Brexit. That means an Australia style WTO outcome.
