It’s very telling that this is the first time Alicent truly stands up to Otto and unchains herself from him… and she does it in the name of protecting Rhaenyra from being assassinated.

Otto’s cold planning of the assassination of Rhaenyra and her family was what it finally took for Alicent to see her father for what he truly was. And Alicent defied him for the first time in her life to protect Rhaenyra.

Alicent can say whatever she wants, but this shows that she never stopped caring deeply about Rhaenyra.

Even though I cannot stand Alicent most times, I actually respect her loads here. She’s finally standing up to Otto, taking power from him and seeing him for what he is - a power-hungry, vicious bastard who sees his family as pawns not as his children/grandchildren. Took her long enough, but now, in the words of Rhaenyra ‘now they see you as you are’.

I like Alicent. She was never anything but dutiful, she treated Viserys well and with kindness, yet her children were neglected in favour of Rhaenyra constantly and she still point blank refused the order to have Rhaenyra and her children killed, even though it would've been so easy to do... I don't get the hate towards her.

There's nothing wrong with that mother comment. It's Otto acknowledging Alicent's growth.
