I have several growing lettuce in them right now. Granted, mine are full gallons. Last year I grew herbs, celery, peppers and micro dwarf tomatoes. I hung them by the handle on a rod attached to my fence. Extended my growing space!

My Great Aunt used to use old coffee cans, old vegetable cans, pretty much anything she could to save some money, she loved starting new plants, whether from cuttings or seeds. Always smart to save when you can.

My partner and I tried this!!! We grew carrots, rocket, dwarf beans and watermelon! All from seeds!! We've replanted the beans, carrots and half the watermelons, but left 2 watermelon plants in one of the milk bottles and its still doing amazing!!!!

I’m going to try this for herbal plants. Thanks for sharing this with us.

I thought of this but in the end decided no to plant food crops in them....apparently all these cheap plastic containers have phylates as their plasticizer which degrades pretty quickly in outdoor environments, possibky leaching into plants. No wonder they get brittle after a month or so....ive have a ton of show plants like pothos training down containers like this

I’ve been using my bottles for frost protection of young seedlings with good success. This is another great tip!

Mark i’ve been told in the past using and form of single use plastics even recyclable ones will still leach toxic and dangerous chemicals into the food grown don’t know how true that is but maybe look into it cheers from north eastern nsw 👍

I did this winter winter sowing in 6 liter water jugs. Amazing results.

Love the idea of hanging them all by the handle on a rod, to create vertical gardens! May just do that...

Very smart... & needn't be too concerned w/ your soil's possible contaminants.

I used too use the gallon ones. Will go back to doing it now that my county is ceasing to recycle anything starting June 1st.

I use aluminum cans and plastic bottles in my large flower pots. I remove any lids and poke holes in them in the bottom half of the pot. When I water them well, moisture gets into the containers and helps keep it moist. I have a really bad back and it creates lighter pots if I need to move them about.

Great idea. I have started doing this and hanging them off a trellis im my small courtyard, making a grow wall. I do not have any garden I can dig because my grounds I share are all concreted or paved.

We’ve done this before as well.
We can get a few years of use from them
