#medicalgaslighting is something that isn't talked about often but is a form of #gaslighting. In this #shortsyoutube video I discuss what it is and how to know the difference between #medicalgaslighting and a doctor not understanding you.

Can a doctor gaslight you? Is my doctor gaslighting me if my doctor thinks I am making up my symptoms? Today, I will discuss how gaslighting is invalidating but not all invalidation is gaslighting. Not all invalidation is gaslighting and this is based on the intent of the person you feel is gaslighting and/or invalidating you. Can a doctor gaslight you? Of course! But just because they don’t believe you or say your symptoms aren’t as they would expect them to be, it doesn’t mean they are gaslighting you. This is true for not only doctors but also relationships, to include dating, friends, family, and work. If you think my narcissist thinks I do everything wrong or my boyfriend makes me feel crazy, then you could be experiencing gaslighting, which is invalidating. Doctors don't believe you if they don't understand and this can be invalidating, but ask yourself the purpose of the person making you feel crazy to determine if it is gaslighting.

Invalidation versus gaslighting can be difficult to distinguish, and it is even harder to notice the difference between the two when invalidation is a part of gaslighting. You may hear of gaslighting mainly with the narcissist. However, gaslighting can occur with anybody and not only someone who has narcissism can be a gaslighting. Gaslighting is emotional abuse and has you question what you think and know as real. When you are gaslighted you are invalidated and this makes you feel like you aren’t being heard. However, invalidation that doesn’t include gaslighting doesn’t have a component of control to it and this is an important distinction I go over in this video. Whether you are being gaslighted or invalidated, you still want to feel heard by your doctor. Finding someone who listens to you and your concerns is important for you getting the care that best helps you.
