I really dig this video, it's introduced me to a lot of concepts I'd never been privy to. That said, every time you cut back to your shot, I keep getting distracted by that dust collection hose. RIP.

When I do my temp walls I usually put 1-2 2x10s on the floor for a bottom plate, 4x6 for the header, and 4x4 legs every ~6' with bottle jacks under the 4x4s at each end and some full length 2x4s tight to those once the bottle jacks have the beam where I want it. This gives 4-8' openings everywhere to walk through. Very workflow friendly. I can understand people prefering regular 2x4s for their temps because they're more easily recycled over the course of the job but I've been using the same 4x4s and 4x6s for my past 4-5 beams. When I'm recessing, I measure 22 3/8" off of each side of the 2x4 top plate of the wall I'm taking out. Then I snap my lines and remove that drywall. It's enough room to comfortably get your hangers in. When you're done with your beam you have a 48 1/4" opening to run full 4x8 sheets with minimal joints. All my subs always mention how clean and open everything is. Side note- Starret lumber actually has the calc software free to use online and I'm 99% sure they'll double check your work for you right in Watertown even if you're not sure you actually need the stock. It's really generous of them.

Not sure if I missed a few uploads but sounds like you’re doing some dental work too. Thank you for always sharing this knowledge and being a great instructor

I spoke to an engineer. And now I know how to drive a train, but still don’t know if my wall is load bearing. Oh well. Great video as usual. Thank you.

Nice coverage. It’s good to talk with an engineer. Now says some interior walls are providing sheer values also.

I have to laugh when people complain about needing a permit to do work like this. Imagine no building codes and winging it? Great informative video!

Thabk you. Question about temp walls. How are the load being carried down? It is sitting on floor joists w/o any support below in basement. I guess it is ok for temp short duration? thanks a lot
