Work Type: Engineering, Steel beam installation

Project: How to remove load bearing wall and install supporting RSJ steel beam.

Methodology

As part of our steel beam design service we prepare the structural calculations to specify the correct steel beam sizes to install for the client.

The next phase is removal of the load bearing rear wall and installation of temporary structural supports using heavy duty acrow props.

Installation of a 1No steel beams installed. Spec of 203 x 102 x 23 UB. This support beam was chosen as the wall above the ground floor was a a single skin constructed of solid break and the span of the beam was 3.1m.

Structural props remain in place to support the steel beam. These supports are loaded onto the existing foundation of the previously removed internal wall, providing good stability for the props during the curing process.

This allows the curing process of the engineering brick supports to settle with minimum shrinkage and movement across the span of the beam.

Above the steel beam, we dry pack the small gaps up to the first floor support with a semi dry, strong 2:1 cement mixture. This is compacted into the gaps between the beam and the first floor.

After curing for 24hrs, the support props can be removed surrounding the support beam, leaving the two acrow props in place under the support beam for a further 24hrs.

After the 24hr curing process all acrow props can be removed and the beam bares the weight of the first floor.

Internally, the steel beams are then lined with fire retardant board and the internal reveals are plaster skimmed.

The client had electricians onsite, so they were able to carry out sockets and light switch migrations, which is a service we normally offer as part of the steel beam installation.

Beam size
1No 203 x 102 x 23 UB
Loaded onto 215 x 215 x 150 pad stones set in mortar
Brick build pier to one side, and beam loaded onto flank rear wall of house

Looking to have similar in a few months. What would this project cost in todays money? Thanks

Guessing the joists ran perpendicular to the removed load bearing wall, so you had to have the bulkhead from the RSJ instead of insetting it into the ceiling?

how did you put weight on the RSJ? I mean load is on 8 vertical pilars if rsj is not under a load the whole ceiling will move a bit after removing the pilars.

Thanks. Wish I could get my guys to work that fast.
I presume Acros are resting above floor joists.

Hello. I have a question. I want to install lintel in my kitchen, 250 cm long. What is the minimum bearing space per side? Above the lintel has 80-90 cm of bricks.

do you use padstones under the RSJ ends?

Hi are you still doing building work in London

I saw that they didn't actually support the upper portion of the brick I thought you had to support the brick above before removing the wall . They look like they only supported the ceiling in front of the walls

how did the wall above the wall you took out not fall down? you only supported the ceilings either side! ? nothing was actually under the wall above! ? .

Put the steel on the floor before you put the acrow props in

Great job much does it cost to take down a load bearing wall? The one i want down is the same size as this one. It's maybe a little smaller it's about 7-8 meters long. I have a house that has two doors at the front....one goes to the stairs and one goes straight to the kitchen but there's no need for the two doors lol...it's a very bad design, i think it maybe because of the days of having coal but I'm not sure. My wife is ill with cancer and I'm trying to give her the home she's always wanted but haven't got a clue how to pull this off plus it's a council property so I'm not sure if i can do it on my own i think you need a proper builder but I'm just a laborer, I've seen and done this before but i think you have to be an actual builder who knows what their doing for them to approve it. We are the only house along our street thar hasn't got this wall down yet lol....I'm in the UK. Thanks guy i really appreciate any advice and help you could give GOD bless....Lee

What is the wood for inside the i beam?

This is NOT a how to video. A how to video takes you through the step to do something. This is just a time lapse video and virtually useless
