If you are using indoor lights, instead of adjusting the shutter speed to make it darker you can simply turn down your lights.

Thing is, as I understand it, it's a presentation of jpegs and the dynamic range is wider if you shoot raw. So to get more out of the shadows, you can push it farther in overexposure.
