in the north African country Tunisia, where authorities have intensified an operation to intercept migrants who are planning to reach Europe by crossing the Mediterranean sea.
The Tunisian National Guard says it has arrested smugglers and stopped more than two-thousand people in its coastal cities, most people have been held back in the city of Sfax. Tunisia has become a key launching pad and the crackdown comes after a record number of crossings to Europe. DW's Christine Mhundwa just returned from a reporting trip in Italy where the migrants are arriving. She spoke to some of them and saw for herself what the situation on the ground has been.

People in Europe don’t want them but the EU does not listen.

Shouldn’t the question be “what can Africa do better?” The way the media talks about this issue, you’d think Europeans are the only humans with agency.

So African countries wanted freedom from being a European colony and when they got freedom, this happens. What went wrong?

Europe can do better by protecting their borders.

1. We are not obliged to allow criminals to force their way into our countries.
2. If we weren't spending billions to support and care for illegal imigrants, we could afford to support our own families and fix our demographics naturally.
3. This unending stream of blame and manipulation is draining everyone's patience and it will not end well unless we stop this idiocy soon.
4. Our European ancestors did not bleed and sweat so that we could waste our inheritance and become a welfare state.
5.We want to feed and cloth our own children, the idea that all Europeans are rich is incredibly ignorant. We are kibd hearted and give when we can, but too many families are struggling needlessly.

Lack of jobs, unfair wages, increasing cost of living. Europe has to help itself before we become too weak to help anyone.

Two Africans discussing why more Africans should come to Europe and how that number can be increased.

I agree with the EU on plans to send back those from countries with considerable level of peace and development: Nigeria, Cameroon, Senegal, The Gambia, to name a few. It's true situations are hard but that doesn't mean you should burden other countries.

Tell them to get on a boat to Norway, then unload them in Africa .

The bottom line is that African governments need to stop their corruption in exploiting their people into poverty. Africa is resource-rich and the money should be given to the people to set up successful lives. Africa has so much potential, but the tribal government mentality is forcing these migrations. Africa has a better climate than Europe and more natural resources.

The EU doesn't have to do anything. It needs to make it really clear that they're not welcome and don't even try.

If the plan is for the EU to take in Africa's overpopulation, then the EU's current welfare society is doomed in a very short time. There is simply not enough money in the coffers to give millions of new immigrants the same standard of living as the current EU population. Then the EU automatically descends to the same level as Africa. What has anyone gained from it. 🤔

For those interested - the European Union has 895.000+ homeless people.

That's nonsense. It is very much possible to get to Europe if you have an employment contract with a European employer. Those are the only people that should come. It is just that simple.

Keep Africans in Africa...there's no more room, bus is full

If they put as much effort into stopping at home, and making their own countries better, as they do at breaking into everyone elses, they'd be much better off.

Is it sustainable for Europe to accommodate all people from Africa? Think if all Africans decide one day to come to Europe how many are they some billions? Can we welcome them all? And why just young men I see them in my region they walk in the streets 10 to 15 people all together.... it is very strange why they do that and very scary for a woman walking alone on the street.

Stop sugar-coating the issue DW. This is first to prioritise EU citizens and borders and only after those from abroad willing to work there.

Europe may need people but Europe has the right to say who and how many and not be dictated to by NGOs and the righteous
