I've been bird watching for only a few years but have gotten really good at identifying my backyard birds. We are attracting more every year. We had a new sound this year & I spent weeks trying to identify it. I downloaded an app that identifies their sound & it's a veery! I hear it, but don't see it. Then my husband cut the hay in the field where I was hearing them & poof GONE. Yes he's in the dog house 😉

Another interesting fact about the ecological significance of birds is exemplified during Mao's "Great Leap Forward" in 1950s China. Sparrows were targeted as part of a nation-wide civic pest control campaign, due to their tendency to feed on rice grains. They were hunted down and killed in the hundreds of thousands, which proved to be a catastrophic mistake, as pest insects grew exponentially due to lack of predation from the birds. Crops were ravaged by the insects, and the resulting famine claimed an estimated 10-50 million human lives.

Eagles aren’t as good as catching fish as Ospreys. I’d heard eagles would steal fish from them. I saw that happen twice watching the Ospreys in the last couple of years.
