Writing a good vocal melody is hard. How do you write a vocal melody and what makes a good vocal melody? Melodic shapes can be a great place to start creating melodies for a song. They don't require you to know much music theory and can be a big part of making melodies express the emotion of the song and its lyrics. In this video, we look at how to make a good vocal melody using the sawtooth or zigzag shape melodic contour.

Songwriting Tips from Famous Songwriters Playlist

Best Songwriting Tools Playlist

These videos are meant to break down the songwriting process into easy to use tips, techniques, and tools that spark creativity and help you apply them like the pros. I do my best to make videos that share the 'secrets' of writing great songs without holding anything back.

My main focus with this channel is to pass on the tools of the trade that I have learned and found to make a big difference to my creative flow and songwriting. There is an old saying that goes "everybody has one great song in them", I hope to show you that once you know what makes a song great, you can apply it to all the songs you write. Start from the heart, follow your gut, and revise with your mind.

Never thought I'd say this, but you should add advertisements to your videos. They're simply too high quality to not be making good money off of them. Whatever Hooktheory is paying you ain't enough for how great these videos are. Seriously my favourite songwriting channel, which is amazing given how few subscribers you have (though I'm sure that will soon change).

Great advice. I love how you actually use examples and show detail. Others don't do this.

You should do habits of songwriters. If you are going to do so, please do Kurt Cobain.

Some of these examples sound like a very slowed down trill. Which might be a way of approaching this conceptually.

Very helpful information. The subtext provided in the melody shape is a big ingredient I’d been missing. I’ve been looking for the ascending and descending melody shape videos, but haven’t been able to find them. Can you link them here?

Thank you for what you do!

Has anyone ever said that it sounds like Connor Mcgreggor narrates these vids?

Shouldn't you have used songs for the singers actually sing with feeling tipped through this point? Instead I heard a cover of Aint no sunshine by a horrible singer. And van halen But sounding like northern exposure. They are both awful.
