Hermit Crab changing shells

A hermit crab will not stay in one shell his or her whole life. As they grow, they'll need a larger shell to live in. They might even change from shell to shell until they stay in one they like.

In this video, you see a hermit crab inspecting a possible new shell before he decides to live in it. Then he pulls itself out of the shell he was in and positions his tail into the new shell and will make a new home for himself.

I dont understand the apeal of painted shells I think the natural shells look a lot prettier especailly since its bad for them

Toxic / non toxic these painted shells are just uncomfortable for them.. I bought a few the first day & put lots of natural shells. They moved in the natural ones over night. Which is a sign they dislike the other shells.

As a hermit crab owner, DONT DO THIS! Hermit crabs tend to bite and chip their shells, if the shell is painted or porcelain, they WILL GET POISONED. When biting and chipping the shell, they expect calcium and a better shell, but when its painted, they will get poisoned from injesting it. If it's porcelain, not only will they get poisoned, they will have a tougher time biting it and it will likely crack due to the material.

The second my crab left his painted shell I yeeted that garbage into the trash. Anything is better then something that’s killing you

Please please don’t buy painted shells they’re so bad fur your hermit crabs. They can choke on the chipped paint and die. I know this was awhile ago but just worried.

These shells are toxic and hermit crabs need a very specific type of home set up to live comfortably and survive. Please don't buy one for your child or yourself without doing proper research into everything they need. This is a very high maintenance pet and they're very sensitive to toxins and bacteria in many different types of materials. Even the sand you use has to be a certain kind.

My hermit crabs died because they had painted shells and those were my only crabs that died and they were the youngest there normal shells are much prettier to!

If you think its bad they have painted shells but, when they have a shell they like and keep it and it's dark colored it can over heat them and make them exhausted so sometimes you need a lighter base
