Absolutely EXCELLENT video. Many people get dogs w/o considering the background of the breed and what the dog needs. Many breeds of dogs that need to work. As stressed in this video working breeds need a job. R Ruble, DVM, PhD, DACVPM

Our Dutchie is 4 and a complete dream. Obedient, calm, super friendly. Just take time to train them when they are pups and they make excellent family dogs!

I've been on the Dutch Shepherd workout program for a year and a month. During the past year there were times that I thought I was too old and beat up for him, but now I'm glad I stuck with him. He's a good.

I want to tell my story about my lovely purebred Dutch long hair shepherd Gabor. I did not know anything about the breed, I wasn’t planning on getting one. We went to the pound to look for a small dog. We didn’t find one so I curiously went to the big dogs. And there he was, it was love at first sight. He was about a year old and his prior owner didn’t want him. So after a waiting period I was able to get him. He was certainly strong and stubborn but also very smart. He was alone a lot unfortunately but he wasn’t destructive at all. He lived to be almost 13 years old. He was certainly the love of my life.

My friend found one (about 9 months old) that had been abandoned in the Nevada desert. After four days, he was finally able to capture it and bring it home. My friend is an excellent trainer and now, six months later, the dog is "perfect". It works hard every morning chasing a ball in the park and interacting (play fighting) with other dogs. It loves snuggles and any game of tug that is going on in the park. It took a lot of work, but between the dog and its owner the result is amazing.

I think you're very accurate on the characteristics of the breed, however I find them to be much easier to deal with than you let on. I found mine in the woods as a juvenile (my vet thought he was a dingo, lol) it took me a couple of years to figure out what he was because I'd never seen one. The brindled coat and huge ears were the giveaway. My Dutchie lives indoors by himself most of the day with me coming home at lunch. While he jumps at the opportunity to go outside every chance he gets, he loves the indoors. He's docile and sweet, doesn't destroy anything, potty trained himself and is ridiculously smart. He has no formal training but can do all the basic tricks and knows our routine. Hes one of the best behaved and most remarkable dogs I've owned. And STRONG! Yes, walking could be an issue for small people. He once held me in the air with one paw while laying in his back (I'm 220), but I trust him with small children and others because of his sweet temperament and patience.

I'd never heard of Dutch Shepherds until this year. They are pretty damn cool looking dogs.

I rescued my Kenny on Kenneth avenue near an elementary school, so I don’t know his real providence, but he ticks every single one of these seven boxes. Fortunately, I was an independent construction contractor and I took him everywhere with me when he was little. I never wanted him to be aggressive, I taught him to love everybody he meets. He was a handful for the first two years, but when he built his confidence, he became the most amazing companion I could ever ask for. I look at him, or he looks at me, and we both know what’s up. He is so expressive, so communicative. I totally agree that this isn’t the dog you can keep in the side yard and spend twenty minutes a day with, but if you have the resolve and the time and you can handle the dutchie, damn, it’s life-altering. In fifteen years, he’s made me a better, kinder person, and he has quite a following of human admirers irl. This is not a hobby pet, this only works if it is an integral and major part of your everyday life.but, hell my life partner of over ten years fell in love with Kenny at a pub before she even knew he was mine. So, Kenny got me the girl.:)

If you have young kids and a young Dutch Shepherd, I highly recommend using bubbles. The DS will jump around trying to catch all of the bubbles and your kids will love it! We adopted ours at 4 months old, and the shelter had no idea what she was. Having young kids while she was a puppy was HARD! She wanted to chase them all of the time. Now that she's 2 years old, she is such a joy! This video is completely accurate.

I have a dutch sheppard and ahe is a beaut!!! I also have another staffie dog. The staffie is the dominant dog. So i think its a good idea to have a mate for yr dutch sheppard. They entertain each other all day and they are the best guard dogs and best friend x

I have been training military and police dogs for years - and the best of them all was a Dutch Sheppard - most loyal friend you can ask for.
