Navigate with Tree Bark!

This method of navigation isn’t well known. It’s commonly used with an analog watch, but if you don’t have one, you can draw / scratch the template onto tree bark and carry it with you.

This works in the northern hemisphere and is *approximate* due to daylight savings time it can be off by a bit. However, the general direction remains true!

Explanation in Layman’s Terms:
*No, This is NOT the same as just knowing sun rises in East and sets in West* - because you cannot travel/follow a bearing consistently with just that knowledge.

*Also, this is very close but not 100% accurate due to daylight savings time and being right at the equator (where the sun’s arc is directly overhead). During DST, you would adjust the current time back by 1hr to get the most accurate estimate of south.

*Always use 12Noon. (Not 12 midnight) to determine if you move counterclockwise or clockwise half way. Ex. 6am, half way between noon is 9am. 6pm halfway between noon is 3pm..

*For Northern Hemisphere*
Sun rises in the east.
Sun sets in the west.
Sun occupies the southern portion of the sky.

If you just walk towards the sun, you will walk Southeast in the morning, and Southwest in the afternoon, but you’ll never be able to take a proper bearing if you are trying to keep on course throughout the day or ACTUALLY navigating.

By pinpointing with the clock method, you can take more accurate (but not always 100% perfect) navigational bearings.

*For the Southern hemisphere - and you Aussie’s, the middle between 12Noon and current time will represent North*

If you ever get lost in the woods build a shed, then someone will come out and ask if you have a permit to build that

If you're ever lost in the woods just find a possum and follow him, you'll be in the middle of a road in no time

A compass usually comes with a mirror so you can see who's lost

My husband has an uncanny ability to tell me what direction is what no matter where we are! I've bought compasses to test him. on hiking trails, fishing camping wherever if I say north-west he'll point north-west When we were dating he said he thought everyone could do that! Spooky talent. But handy when you hike.

If ever lost in the woods just start fishing and someone will come give you a ticket for fishing without a permit

My dad said when he was younger his brother and himself told their younger brother look at the sun when you go into the woods and you will know how to get out the woods. So brother went in in the morning with the sun behind him. When the day was getting almost done he headed toward the sun. Yep, they had to go looking for him.

My father taught me that trick when I was a young lad. It can save your life. Thank you for sharing this with us 👍😊

Knowing which way is north or south is great, knowing how you got lost is priceless.

You don’t need the time. Place a stick vertically in the ground so that it casts a shadow. Mark the shadow’s tip with a stone or other marker. Wait 15-30 minutes, then mark the new position of the shadow’s tip. The line connecting these two points will run from west to east. Standing with the first point on your left and the second point on your right, you will be facing north.

Another nugget: the bark always grows on the outside of a tree.

When I worked in the fields with Mexicans straight over the boarder..no english...he looks at me and says "mirar" (look)....
I watch him...he puts a stick in the ground...and shows me the the direction of the shadow from the sun, and says...it's 2:15pm....I looked at my watch and the time was 2:10pm....he knew how accurate what time it was.from a stick in the ground and the shadow it was facing. Down witj within 5 min accuracy....simply amazing

Just tried this in the dark... Instructions unclear, I cannot find the sun.

At dawn the sun is in the east, mid-day it is to the south, at sunset, it is towards the west. They teach that in cub scouts.

Actually this is good information especially if you a hiker. So many people die because they basically get lost and end up going in circle. A river will almost get you to a town or road.

My step dad Joe Alvarez taught us this in 1954! ❤ Now I teach my students!

I was taught this by a old Surveyor named George Minnus.
Back in the 80's. I to have shared this knowledge with others.
Great post 👍👍👍

Another incredible way is put a stick in the ground, mark the tip of its shadow, wait awhile then mark the shadow again and you have your east and west. From there you should be able to figure out where north and south are.

Or just become a dad, because dads always know exactly what direction we're facing at every instance of the space time continuum.
