Very important detail: he used only dead trees because it was for demonstration and he didn’t want to damage live trees when he didn’t have to. If you’re in a survival situation, mark the trees that most closely follow your line, dead or alive.

Great tip. I did this as a kid with great success. I later switched to bright orange vinyl tape tied around the trunk or low hanging branches. The more dense the vegetation got the closer I put the markings to each other. I collected them on the way back to reuse. I small roll costs and weighs nothing. Love your channel. Your presentations are clear and succinct.

Back in the 70's when I was a Boy Scout, this was called blazing a trail.

Unless you are in a "tactical survival" scenario, you can always use bright colored paracord (like the orange/with reflective thread that now comes "free" with tarps etc), surveyors tape, or bright cloth cut into narrow 1-2" strips. I also saw a kit of glow-in-the-dark markers that you can hang on trees/bushes...

Blazing trees is definitely a great navigational technique. Ive actually had to do this before when i got lost for about a day and a half on the CDT. It helped me out quite a bit, and kept me from becoming even more lost. That SUUNTO Compass is awesome, by the way! I bought that exact same one about a year ago, and i absolutely love it. One of the best quality compasses out there, and thats a fact. Before i bought the SUUNTO i had been using a Silva Ranger for like 10 years, and a Cammenga 3H for many years before that. Both excellent compasses as well. I really the SUUNTO the best out of all of them tho.

Thank you for demonstrating on dead trees. ❤

Excellent advice and of course, should only be used for emergency situations. Here’s the problem though. It seems like oftentimes people get lost simply taking a short walk…

Hi ! And if you don't have a knife I took a long branch that was laying on the ground and wedged against a tree on like a 45°degree angle and do the same technique as you walk away and keep eye contact on your other marker. I use this method sometimes when hunting looking for shot
Wildlife so you can find your way back and you know the area where you already looked for the wild life .🙏🇺🇲🇬🇧✌️

Good advice. Maybe you should make a clip about how to use a Swedish compass

That’s blazing a trail. Moss only grows where the sun shines. Look at the bottom of trees, and you will know which way west is. That is a good navigational tip.
