I enjoyed this series, makes us think. Hemlock in the building industry is known for shake problems, where the growth rings come unglued a structural problem. This I believe is dependent on soil types but may have to some degree on solar orientation as well. Spruce, just as they make great cordage also are the stronger soft wood in Maine woods, tenacious and not the easiest wood to work with hand tools but strong. Balsam fir being the weakest, tops easily snap off in heavy wet snow and ice conditions.
