- Setting up budget alerts is important so we have an accurate idea of what our costs will be for the month, as sometimes usages can be higher than expected or you're not familiar with the billing details particularly if you're learning.
- First thing we do is navigate to the budgets console and click create budget. From here we can see the different types of budges available, however cost budget is usually recommended especially for personal projects and when you're learning.
- Mostly because at those stages you do not want your budgets to scale up and down depending on a usage pattern but more so match a hard cost amount you had allocated beforehand.
- Now we will select a fixed recurring budget that is starting this month, we will give it an absolute value of $10 and obviously you can change this to be in line with what you're budget is.
- Now comes the thresholds, and here we can set different triggers within this budget to be notified to.
- We will first select a threshold of $1, so we know if we have gone above that threshold for the month to get an email at the email you have provided. We will do the same again for $5.
- Now what I like about AWS budgets is that you can also setup forecasted budgets, so if you're spending a $1 a day for 3 days, you're forecasted budget will be $30 and if you're threshold is below that it'll let you know beforehand. This is great for smaller services that may slowly creep up
to hit our forecasted budget but we may not find out about them until much later on in the month.
- Now that we have that set up, we have created our budget alarm.
- To review we setup an AWS budget so we're notified beforehand in case we use a service with a cost/usage we were not expecting. We did this by going to the AWS budget console and creating a budget, with varying thresholds and providing an email to be notified at.
