How to Find Fish at a New Lake - Bluegill and Crappie Fishing

If you want to know how to find fish at a new lake, watch me do some bluegill and crappie fishing at a new spot. I look around and try a few things to find and catch that first fish. Then I focus on what works to catch a few more. I am fishing with a float and gulp minnow because it's good at imitating natural forage. Since the downed tree was holding fish this time, I will be sure to try it next time I am at this spot. So far the new lake is producing bluegill and crappie, and I am excited to break it down further in the future.

I can't wait to get kooked up on a crappie one of these days. Took the kayak out to my lake and spent 4 to 5 hours fishing only had one bite that came off at the boat but it was still better than laying around the house all day.

Gulp minnows are also my go to bait when I'm not sure what I will be catching.

I've been trying for bass and trout up in the Pacific Northwest and getting skunked. Gonna try for crappie and blue gill next. I'm at the point where ANY fish will be a celebration. Thank you for your videos! I'm new/returning to fishing and I learn so much about rig setup and retrieval skills from you.

The crappie on my pond school in the same place every spring and are aggressive. Then, they move all over the pond in schools where it's the deepest. Although the schools move around, you can see where they are on the surface and trolling through them with a crankbait will almost always catch one on each pass through a school. Later in the summer, they collect in schools around various structures. Fishing those structures takes more patience than fishing them in the spring. In the spring, they will hit a skirted jig almost every time. In the late summer, they have to be enticed a little to hit a jig. By September, both the crappie and bass start biting regularly, once more. All it takes is a good cool down. Then things slow down again through the winter.

I love that you are starting with the smaller stuff and learning the lake. I would not have been able to resist the urge to be throwing stick baits around for so long, though.

When I got my friend's fishing rod, the bass was no longer on it; it had broken off. However, his bobber was missing and nowhere on the pond. When I pulled up the Christmas tree, I found his bobber snagged in the limbs. Once that bass was hooked, it ran to the Christmas tree hung the line in the limbs and broke off.

Ready to explore more of this lake! Nice and clean. I would pack a panfish pole and a baitcaster, extra lures and pliers. I would walk where I could. Walk quietly and listen to the lake. You have some real estate to cover😉
