This video covers the concept of finding the direction of frictional force on the wheels of a vehicle. Depending on which wheel is connected to the engine, the direction is different. View this video to find out more!

Thanks a lot. I needed this. My teacher only showed us the example of the wheel that is connected to the engine. So i used that example in all my calculations. When i got it wrong, I was confused as to why different examples showed different direction of friction.

thank you for clarifying this for me, the breakthrough moment of understanding came! I answered all the questions correctly while paused! Thanks Again!! 💯

This is wrong. First, the back wheels do not drag, , like legs. So, the analogy is bad. If the wheels are not slipping, then friction is forward for both back and front wheels. Based on what you are saying, the back wheels would create a clockwise torque that would actually speed the car up. If the back wheels are indeed spinning clockwise, the same at the front wheels, then the contact point between the wheel and the ground has zero velocity but that point of the wheel is trying to slide backwards, therefore friction is forwards. You might argue that your explanation explains the advantage of a four wheel drive car. Its doesn't, four wheel drive only offers advantage when wheels might be slipping.

Why do the red backward forces slow the vehicles? Those static friction forces are not doing any work as there is no slipping.
