My father studied world history in college on the GI Bill after he got out of the Army after the Korean War. He said his professor explained it this way. A society starts off lean, mean and hungry. They fight their neighbors and enemies over land and resources. They win and eventually become the strongest and most powerful around. They become rich and eventually become corrupt and lazy. They hire other people to fight their wars and become obsessed with entertainment and luxury. The society becomes weak and decadent. Then some other society of lean, mean people conquer them and the cycle starts all over again. It happened to the Greeks, the Romans... and it's happening now. People should remember that after the Roman Empire collapsed, we had something called the Dark Ages that lasted a thousand years... and that was a very bad time in human history.
