Hampton Court Palace is one of oldest Royal Palaces in the United Kingdom.
Home of King Henry VIII and the the Tudor dynasty: a 500-year old royal pleasure palace. The original Tudor Hampton Court Palace was begun by Cardinal Wolsey in the early 16th century, but it soon attracted the attention of Henry VIII, who brought all his six wives here. Surrounded by gorgeous gardens and famous features such as the Maze and the Great Vine, the palace has been the setting for many nationally important events.
The Great Hall of Hampton Court Palace is the only surviving hall built by Henry VIII. At first-floor level, it stands above two large cellars and was principally constructed between 1532 and 1535. It was designed to impress and to proclaim Henry VIII’s power and magnificence. Henry VIII's carpenters began working on the huge timber roof of the Great Hall in 1533, the King had divorced his first wife Katherine of Aragon and was married to his second, Anne Boleyn.

To celebrate Henry and Anne's marriage, the carpenters added Anne's coat-of-arms to the roof and carved the entwined letters H and A on the wooden screen at the end of the Great Hall. These poignant reminders of Anne's time as Queen can still be seen today. Sensational discovery after 5 centuries Anne Boleyn's heraldic emblem was found undamaged hidden in the roof of the great hall.
