East African Heads of state meeting in Nairobi, Kenya on Monday have called for an immediate ceasefire and cessation of hostilities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) where fighting in the last few weeks has left thousands displaced.

The leaders also agreed on the modalities of the deployment of an East African regional force whose mandate will be to stabilize the troubled regions in the DRC.

In April this year, East African Heads of state agreed to the deployment of troops and last week Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta who is also the EAC chairman called on the immediate deployment of troops to pacify the provinces of South Kivu, North Kivu and Ituri in the East of the DRC.

Thembisa Fakude a Senior Research Fellow at Africa Asia Dialogues joins us via Zoom for a discussion.

the absence of Magufuli is still heavy on our hearts. we could have had our first East African President. Hopefully Kenyatta can be once he ends his term in office this year.

Solving DRC is very very simple, Just unite the east African countries, with one president, one military and a monetary union. Then there will be no Rwanda or DRC or Kenya, or Uganda. we will just be East Africa. Why is none of these guys saying this? If we are all one, we can move from country to country and be protected by the same military under the same president. There is power in unity.... see USA, Russia, China... these are not just small countries, they are stable because they are big. I do not think that Rwanda would be a problem if East African Federation is realized now. the sooner the better.
