Most African Americans have a higher African DNA percentage than this. People believe that this is the norm when it isn't most African-Americans have at least 80% African DNA. The reason why statistics show African Americans having an average of 25% European DNA is because they also include biracial people and count them as African-American.

For those confused as to why many Black Americans have European admixture: slavery. White men (mostly slave owners) regularly raped enslaved women. Islanders were a little more separated from the white plantation owners, so the Gullah Geechee would have higher West African %. There was some non-rape mixing in some places, but majority of the European comes from slavery. 400 years of slavery produces Black Americans who are 70-90% African, 10-30% European (and trace Indigenous American). So, yes, a Black person could be 75% West African with no known White relatives.

Edit: for those trying to say it's closer to 250 yrs: the first slave ships to the Americas were in the early 1500s (mostly to the Caribbean, of course, but some of them eventually ended up in what would become the US). Emancipation Proclamation was in 1863, but the south held onto slaves for as long as they could get away with. Most were freed by the end of the 1800s, but there were still some kept in peonage slavery until the 1960s (Mae Louise Walls Miller is one of many cases of a girl born into slavery and wasn't freed until she was 14 in 1963). Basically, white plantation owners always found some work around to justify keeping slaves. It's one of those things they don't teach you in school. Some ADOS families are descended from Africans brought to the Americas in the 1500s, while others descend from those brought in the 1700s and some people were born into slavery even in the 1900s US. The height of slavery in the US was in those middle centuries, but slavery existed before and after with pretty much the same slaveowner behavior, but just fewer slaves than in the year 1800.

My mom is roughly 97% African. I differentiate my cousins based on their percentages. My moms side is Gullah (mostly Florida and North Carolina) so they tend to be higher . Really like 88 and above. My dad is the mixed one(He’s like 70 or like high 60s in African DNA)His family mixed more (He’s from New York so I guess that makes sense). It’s very easy to tell.

What’s crazy is all that mixing and your offspring will most likely receive the top 50% of that meaning you will most likely to pass on the Nigerian and Benin and Togo DNA to your offspring. Which is why the one drop rule became a thing because yt ppl started to realize you can be light asf and still have African genes or DNA
