The Philippines was a Spanish and then US colony. They set its boundaries but did not include any islands in the South China Sea as they knew the islands belonged to China. But later due to navigation improvement, they could reach far into SCS so wanted to obtain the islands and denied their previous admittance that the islands belonged to China.

The prudent response is to invoke US-Phil Mutual Defense Treaty promptly. The aggression of Chinese PLA militia is NOT without order from the central command. Given the quandary and chaos that emerge from the CCP / PLA Central command, this incident in Ayungin Shoal is a prelude to the long - term plan to secure the reef and order the Philippine contingent on board Sierra Madre to leave - hook or by crook. If it happens these brave Filipino soldiers will really stand their ground, at all cost, with their own lives. NOW, the moral duty of the government is to intervene with dispatch - ask the help of the Americans, Japanese, Australian and South Koreans, whichever Navy is closer to the Ayungin shoal and Pag-asa Islands. We should worry the body language of Chinese PLA leadership and be ready for the worst!
