I couldnt believe it, a planter box created from only 3 fence pickets? Costing only $3 each, these planter boxes have a low production cost of around $10! You can see all over facebook marketplace where people are selling them for $60-$80, but I found mine to sell the best when priced at $30. And many people bought this size box as an add-on. A lot of people either wanted custom boxes. Which, I qouted a selling cost of $10 per $3 fence picket I used.

We have planted many different varieties in these boxes and they are doing great. I do not use a liner; cedar is naturally weather sealed and will not rot, warp, decay or mold. I also did not seal the boxes with any sort of clear coat or paint. Overtime, cedar will turn from its pretty redish brown to grey when exposed to sunlight for a prolonged period of time.

These are a great foot-in-the-door project for anybody who is looking to begin selling their woodworking projects, or simply taking their woodworking hobby to the next level. Before these planter boxes, I only made furniture and built things for myself, and family (where I only charged them for the materials). These boxes not only helped me to make my first dollar by woodworking, but when posting this video, I have made $1208 profit; and yes, thats factoring in my total materials cost, from buyers in a small town of 3000 people.

Two tips not mentioned in the video:
1) do not take large orders or custom orders without obtaining a deposit. Luckily I had only one person order a taller 25x16x16 box and stop responding to me, his name is Ron Whitaker... Unfortunately I did not take deposits or payment in advance, but these are also not expensive to build.
2) you can use treated boards, cedar is less than a dollar more and better for the plants, unless you use a liner and are going to paint the exterior.

Thanks again for watching, and please please please like this video so it can be suggested to other cool cats like yourselves. Bye for now!!

Big props for tracking even the number of nails used. I'm so tired of "$6 planter boxes OMG!!" but then they use $10 in pocket screws alone, and also you have to buy the plans.

Maybe do a video on making a plywood push stick. You're fingers are pretty close to the blade pushing the thin strips through.

My 8 year old son and I made one of these today, thanks for the cut list! Even with the list I managed to cut the tops too long THEN too short and had to rip down another picket. This turned into a 3 1/2 picket planter for us but it was a lot of fun.

I just made this and the scraps made perfect little “handles” so it doesn’t have to be lifted by the mitered top lip. Works great and looks great. Thanks dude.

Killer work man!!!! Tik tok led me here. Me and wife are homesteaders and I love how simple cheap but yet nice these are. I’ll be making a few

Great video son. Reassuring me our faith in our youth. One critique, use a push stick on the table saw. I have many friends that can only count to nine.

Love the video. You should use the scraps. Cut 4 small glue blocks for the bottom. Put them in the corner of the legs on the underside with a little glue. Strengthening everything up including the bottom

I use scraps like the dog ears to stable a small shelf to the bottom of the box, then the floor sits on those. This avoids nailing into the endgrain anywhere and the floor nails are all on the inside.

The glue application to the top of the box was so satisfying to watch. Great video man!

I the authenticity in the video in yourself, this video is worth so much more views and likes based on how you do this as a friend and not to just market yourself.

I finally stopped yakking about doing it and did it. Made a pair for Christmas presents and they look pretty damn good and are damn easy to make. For sure worth it. Our cost for 6' Western Red cedar pickets here in Washington is 4.26 each so *boohoo* not as cheap as others can make them but still totally worth the time. I am a noob wannabe and busted them out in less than 3 hours, doing one atta time. Thanks for sharing Vossman and Happy New Merry Christmas Year!

Great work! But, please use a push stick at the table saw. No matter how careful you are, you have to promote safe work practices to others.

As an update I finally made my first planter box!! I made a small mistake and ended up putting the bottom on the top and had to pull out the brad nails. 😅I got a bit rushed, but I hid the damage on the outside from me having to drill some shallow holes to remove the brad nails by adding trim on the outside facings.

It still looks beautiful regardless! I'm getting lots of friends asking for one now lmao. Thanks for the awesome video I could follow and the cutting plan included!

I made one of these yesterday. It worked out great. When I put it on the driveway to show my wife, my neighbor yelled from across the street "Are you taking orders?". So that is encouraging, should I decide to sell them. Also, I added 3/4"x1" cleats to the inside of one of the sides to support the bottom panels which fit loosely. Thanks again for the video.

Came from TikTok… just wanted to see the process. I have none of these tools and never worked with wood. However, the directions are simple and clear if I had the tools.

So the $10 would be more like several hundred dollars in my case. 😂

Thanks for sharing!
