SLOT GOT EVERYTHING HE WANTED! | Southampton 1-2 Liverpool reaction

Liverpool claimed a place in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup as they beat Southampton 2-1 at St Mary's on Wednesday evening.

Arne Slot's men seemed to be cruising to victory after carving out a two-goal lead early in the first half through Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott.

But they were made to work their win after Cameron Archer pulled one back with just over half an hour remaining.

Still, Reds reporter David Lynch felt there was plenty to be positive about after a much-changed side set up yet another League Cup semi appearance.

Here, he praises Slot's use of an unusual system for that, while Wataru Endo and Harvey Elliott are both also credited.

Check out this analysis of the game and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Is it good news that Liverpool are through or are you worried about the number of games?

I've always been a fan of Endo since he kept a player of Modric's quality quiet for 90 minutes in the Qatar World Cup when playing for Japan against Croatia. He may not be technically gifted with silky ball skills like Trent, but he doesn't go missing and posing for the TV cameras like Trent did way too often against Fulham at the weekend. What he gives is fighting spirit and work-rate and his attitude marks him as a model professional. Every team needs a sprinkling of players who are prepared to do what it takes to win, someone who will run through brick walls for the team.

It was good to see Darwin getting on the scoresheet tonight; thought he took it well and, hopefully, it gives him a confidence boost. As for Chiesa, we'll need to be patient with him and not expect too much from him straight away given that he's not played much football for several months. We just need to get behind him and give him the love and support he needs to get back to his best.

Up the mighty top-of-the-league Reds! YNWA!!!

it’s nice to see Endo get some game time and it was great to see him play so well. Probably the best 15 million any team in the premiership has spent in the last few years. Top professional!Tremendous value for money.

What a brilliant performance by Endo. Absolutely Stellar throughout

Stoked you give Endo a big thumbs up. He is a 'road-block' in the middle and what he lacks in the spectacular he makes up with a doggedness that sometimes goes unappreciated. Give him some more playing time so that he feels more a part of the team so that he sticks around for the future.

When I saw how abysmal the weather was, all I asked for was no injuries. The win and good performance from Harvey, Endo, etc was a bonus. Chiesa did look slightly off physically but he showed moments of class

I always have and will always advocate for Endo to have more game time. That man is a rock in the middle of the field

Endo is a class act, the consummate professional and yes a warrior. I agree with David and hope he gets more opportunities to contribute and compete. He won’t disappoint. 👍👍👍

Happy to see the fans mentioning Endo in the comments. I love this guy for his work rate and never give up attitude. I hope he gets more game time, even though it looks unlikely.

Glad to see Wataru Endo played well, he's my MOTM too!

Don't understand why Slot doesn't deploy Endo more as a "closer" when Liverpool has a lead after ~75 minutes and isn't chasing the game, to give Gravenberch, Sobo, and Macca a breather. Endo is obviously not Slot's starter but he is a very capable DM off the bench to help protect leads and close out games.

Great to see Endo get some minutes. Also really impressed with Trey Nyoni and would love to see more from him soon. Danns looked promising as well.

I don't begrudge Slot underutilizing Endo because he doesn't offer as much offensively compared to the rest of the starting midfielders, but defensively, he shades just about every one of them or at least on par with our best midfielders. With Konate out, I do think Endo can contribute more to the team and deserves more minutes, especially with the uptick in goals conceded since Konate's injury.

Spot on assessment of Chiesa performance. Clearly not fully fit but in brief moments you can see there is something special there.

Nice to see Endo with the captains armband. It is unfortunate him getting hit in the face with the ball led to a goal.

Morton was an unsung performance….. he was so cool in midfield and showed he can play RB with ease. Love his and McConnell physicality…

Endo struggles at DM in Slots system as he can't receive and turn on the ball. The reason why he shone last night was that the game was in front of him. He didnt need to turn with the ball. He's good with forward passes and defending and he's quick and can read the threat well.... The CB role suits him. What was especially outstanding was unlike our CB's including VVD. He doesn't back away and back away and allow opposition to get closer to the goals. He goes in and Tackles and intercepts higher up the pitch! That was very refreshing to see.

Endo and Morton the two standout performers for me...couldn't agree more about the Academy players...once again they show their value and the great work Inglethorpe and his team do

Appreciate David providing equally incisive analysis to an EFL game as would Premier League.

Thanks David for your summary report. There will be lots of opportunities for players like Endo, Chiesa, Quansah, Morton, Nyoni, ..etc over the coming weeks to get playing time. The FA cup against Accrington, the last 2 dead rubber champion league (though theoretically we hv not officially got the top 8 confirmed yet)and the 2 league cup semi finals. The more games the merrier!
