Creating VIRTUAL MONITORS With Xrandr on Linux

I've been looking for a way to configure virtual monitors on Linux for a while and I finally discovered that I could do it with xrandr, and it's surprisingly easy to configure. Virtual workspaces are nice but being able to see everything on your screen at once within designated quadrants is far more useful I think.

Thank you, managed to split ultrawide to 3 segments like this and it's perfect:

This can be useful if you have an ultrawide monitor. For productivity, split them into two virtual monitors. While gaming, switch back to one.

I was having problems because I have three physical monitors. Just in case someone has the same problem: the y coordinate starts at the far left of the first monitor. So you have to add the width of the first monitor to the y in the second monitor. I don't know if Brodie mentioned this, but just in case.

To properly swich back, I had to run xrandr --fb too. So I moved the 2 xrandr --fb commands at the end of the script.

can you open a browser window in one screen and set it to fullscreen with F11 so that it stays fullscreen but only in one virtual monitor?

Great video. I3 pretty hard to use, wonder the split monitors can be done on gnome or xfce4 desktop?

Really nice, good stuff. I'm just wondering if its possible to create new adaptors (as many as you like) so you can connect them via VNC and Ethernet

got a second 1080p projector on the way. planning to have both sideways and then create a virtual monitor over them so that they act like 1 monitor.

I'm using Ubuntu and I'm wondering if I can create a xorg.conf.d folder and nano monitor file in it or has to be in /bin/sh folders?

if i want to take a 3840x2160 monitor and split it into 2 virtual 3840x1080 stacked monitors, will this method allow me to maximize a program in one of the monitors and have it be limited to fullscreen 3840x1080?

Hey Brodie. I'm trying to figure out a way to just crop out a part of my 55 inch monitor using xrandr. (so to only use 1920x1080 out of 3840x2160 of my monitor and leave every other part black) I searched for it in a few different places. I failed to find any thing of value. Do you have any idea from which angle I can tackle this problem?

Hi! Dumb question, how do I measure screen sizes? I have a 42 inch TV that I use as a monitor and I'd like to chop it into multiple virtual monitors of different sizes (two vertical ones at the edges a horizontal one in the middle and two auxiliary v.monitors on the top and bottom of the middle one). How can I do that? Thanks in advance!

This was working perfectly on Linux Mint 20.3, after upgrading to Linux Mint 21.1, it doesn't work anymore. 😐
