I'm sure you've heard about single-action revolvers before if you're not completely new to the world of handguns and you've watched at least a few western movies. Single action revolvers are commonly referred to as Old West revolvers because they are, besides wild horses, vaqueros, sheriff stars, and longhorns, one of the most well-known icons of the Wild West era. The Colt Single Action Army revolver is regarded as the most widely used SAO revolver. But which single-action revolvers are the best? And how do you transport them? Let's find out, then.

My husband's 1972 3-screw Ruger .357mag SA Blackhawk is the smoothest, most accurate handgun he has ever owned. He added Altamont grips which also made it a work of art when seen as a whole. The 2-3 lb trigger pull greatly adds to accuracy. He bought it the year after returning from Vietnam and he would never sell it for any price. That and his Uberti 1858 Remington replica SA Army in 45LC are his prized possessions.

I was started on at age 8 or 9 with my dad's Colt SAA .45. Single action revolvers have been my go to handgun ever since. I am now in my 80s and still carry one daily. I have two Colts, one made on 1904 that I carried until the early 80s when I realized it's value. So I semi-retired it and bought a New Generation Colt SAA that I carry as my primary side arm. I have always been a better shot with the SA than with any other type, probably because for me they have a natural point ability that does not require use of sights at any distance of 20 feet or less, bullets hit where I am looking! Have never been able to develop that with any other handgun. Would I use a SA as a tactical weapon, no! But as a, for me, a dependable defensive weapon, it will always be my first choice.

I've owned Ruger Blackhawk in 357 mag since early 1972. I recently added a Heritage Roughrider in 22/22 mag. I am very happy with both.

For price and quality, you can't beat Rugers. Especially a Blackhawk or a Vaquero!!! Great revolvers!!

Freedom Arms are the best in quality without any doubt. Can be cost prohibitive though. I’ve had Colt SAA ‘s and you cannot load them even close to the pressures that a Freedom Arms will stand.

Best for me was the Uberti Cattleman that uses cylinders for both 45 long colt and 45 ACP without need for moon clips.

My fav. is the Ruger Vaquero Bisley, the old model with the larger frame. Stainless steel in .357. I have a few Uberti and Pietta SAA clones and Heritage and Ruger .22's. They are all great fun. Doing a 310 To Yuma Hand of God and a Man With No Name Eastwood 5.5" Snake grip gun too.

I bought a Uberti (Taylor's & Company Gunfighter model) in .357 with a 5 1/2" barrel. it shoots great, next best single action to the older Colts. IMO of course!

I enjoyed your video and found it informative. As a cowboy shooter, I would always prefer the Colt, but I have recently changed my shooting to a Ruger Vicaro stainless steel and now am quite comfortable with that firearm for such shooting. The New Vicaro does have a few advantages compared to the old, and can still be found for a reasonable price. Thanks for your video and opinion.

I have two Ruger Single Actions, .22 and .44 Mag. Old model 3 screw. I'm looking to get a .45 LC now.

Much as I love the Colt 1873, it is not the best Single Action Revolver anymore. It hasn't been in almost 100 years. The biggest flaw that lost it that title is it being underbuilt. Even the pistols made in later runs by Colt will not hold up to modern loadings for the rounds they are chambered in. I can load a spicy .45 Long Colt that has similar power to a .44 Magnum into my Ruger Blackhawk and expect the revolver to hold up. You load that same round into a Colt and you are liable to blow the cylinder apart

I have two revolvers made off the SAA 1873 first generation clone idea. Both are Hawes from J. P. Sauer and sons in Germany. One revolver a 357 magnum and the other a 22 magnum. A minor problem with my 22 pistol had me asking my gun man if maybe I should buy one of the newer cheaper ones they have today. He gave me a serious look and said my gun was better than 2 of the models they make today. OK. I guess I will just live with the blueing being worn off most of that 22 magnum. I've had it over 30 years and the 357 is from a collection. It's all steel and looks brand new. Excellent condition.

Ruger Blackhawk in .41 Mag is a great platform

I have a Pietta which is apparently so precise a copy that Colt parts will fit. Ya gotta have at least ONE cowboy gun in the safe and mine is in 45 Colt.

I have old model Rutgers and 2nd gen colts. Also one you’ve left out is ruger single six’s I have a rather extensive collection of single actions and although my colt put the biggest smile on my face, the SA’s I shoot the most by far are the old model ruger BH in .357 and my new model Ruger Vaquero. They are solid and 100% reliable.

I enjoy my Beretta Stampede .38/.357. Has a transfer bar so you can load all 6. Based on the Uberti, and more similar to the Colt.
