Is ULTRARAM a game changer? | The Backend Engineering Show

Scientists at the Physics and Engineering Department of the UK’s Lancaster University published a new paper describing ULTRARAM. A Low-Energy, High-Endurance, Compound-Semiconductor Memory on Silicon.

I think this tech is a game changer but I still have my doubts. Let us discuss

This isn't only a gamechanger in the firmware software stack, but a gamechanger for all user code as well. If your disk is as fast as your RAM, nothing is going to be disk I/O bound anymore. No need for asynchronous programming models when involving files, and we can go back to everything being synchronized for these cases.

So you just need to use the SDD during long power cuts? With an internal battery battery or a UPS the lifetime of a SSD or HDD could be infinite because you're not constantly writing things to it.

This days ssd loosing date between 3 weeks and 2 years without power, depending also on the environment temperature, the higher the temperature the faster the data get lost.
And the new UltraRAM also need Lees power for working, I can't wait for them to appear and hopefully be inexpensive, also it would be a awesome data backup platform. 🤗

This is just a begining project, don't expect this product will be launched soon. The developers says that the mininum time is 2024, but thinking about development history, this research may go until 2030 to be really produced.
