Hashimoto's thyroiditis: How to deal with arthritis and nerve pain

This is a recording of a presentation I gave at a Butterfly Bandits event -- in it I outline my treatment approach to the neurological and musculoskeletal problems that commonly go along with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and hypothyroidism. As a chiropractor, I commonly deal with low back pain, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, myopathy, and more. Sometimes, these issues can be traced back to the thyroid gland. Autoimmune thyroid disease can present as a systemic inflammatory disease, where autoantibodies form against the ligaments, muscles, and joints and create many common aches and pains. A simple nutritional program can help get rid of antibodies associated with thyroid disease, and selenium is the best researched micronutrient at doing just that. I review the mechanisms at work, and suggest a couple other supplements for neuro & musculoskeletal problems in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

OMG I just found out I have Hashimoto's after all these symptoms attacking my joints, with lots of pain and inflammation in shoulders, elbows and fatigue. Never imagined my arthritis could be related to the thyroid. Thanks.

Dr. Rob,

Thanks so much. Your presentation comes closer to giving clear explanation why we, the people with Hashimoto's, have so much issues with joints.

I have some questions though if you could help respond,

1) If toxicity in the Thyroid gland is triggering so many antibodies then do you think removing thyroid gland can give relief?

2) Similarly, as thyroid gland is destroyed as time progress then are the symptoms reduced as antibodies should come down?

3) How long does not it take for Selenium to take effect?

Wow, very helpful! Thank you, Dr Rob! Been diagnosed with Hoshimotos a number of years ago.I am on Levothyroxine to regulate my thyroid and Gabapentin for nerve pain. Have musculoskelotal pain, nerve pain with pins and needles down my arms.. Stressful times make it worse, working out is difficult without lapsing into deep pain at times. My blood pressure is elevated at times as well along with it. I have been put on 10mg of Lisinopril, and I have changed my diet quite a bit and lost about 15 lbs. The attacking antibodies make so much sense in my body's response.. Already on vitamin C, going to add Selenium and MSM to see if it helps. Is there any correlattion you have seen between pain, blood pressure, and Hoshimotos?

I have very low thyroid count. Doctors will not prescribe anything until I reach 5 points near the end. I have no faith
