I live in ShenZhen. In 2010, there were 2 lines, half of Line 1 and about 10% of Line 2. In summer of 2011, over a period of two weeks, FIVE LINES OPENED SIMULTANEOUSLY!

When I lived in America, it took 10 years to open one line in LA. That line basically goes from nowhere to nowhere.

What a load of rubbish. I taught English in China for ten Years in Universities from Tianjin to Nanchang to Guangzhou. The Education system did not focus on spoken English
The exams were about A B C D answers spoken English was a rare topic.
How many young people in China are fed up with studying at University and not being able to find a job on Graduation.
Often Teachers sold the answers to English exams to students prior the exams.
I know this for a fact.

They hadn’t really started building them until recent years, London for instance has huge numbers of overground train lines that aren’t part of their metro statistics. That’s not to say it isn’t impressive China has built so many miles, so quickly but in the typical Chinese way they are cookie cutter mostly identical stations and many built without a need yet - when you don’t need to worry about that pesky democracy thing, turns out governments can build quickly. Still, I’ll happily stay in an old infrastructure, argumentative democracy any day.
