I needed that. I'm in Week 8 of training having won a ballot place for London in April. As a 60+ year old runner, albeit a 'seasoned' one, I thought what's not to like with that!. I had a conversation yesterday with my missus as she asked if I was OK and I had to say I was disillusioned as the training was becoming wearing. So thanks my man this came at just the right time and its perked me up.

Training for a spring marathon is hard. All sacrifices you make.
Running in darkness, rain, cold.
When the going gets tough the tough get going💪

So many great points for us all to remember. The road is defiantly long and its good to remember all the points mentioned, including the fact the training starts to consume us and its all we end up talking and thinking about. I sometimes pity my poor wife listening to me rambling on about it all. But she too now has the bug for it maybe she simply got fed up listening to me.

Love the bucking bronco analogy. I'm on wk5/18 of my 50k plan and am already questioning myself. Needed this video - thanks Fordy.

Great vid as always Fordy and super useful as I have been worrying about my training for the London Marathon.

To keep my motivation high, I do a low mileage approach. 1 long run at marathon effort 10-18mi.+, 1 tempo @ 10k effort (5-8 mi), and 1 short interval speed work @ 3k-5k effort. That’s it. 48 hr. recovery. I do a 20 week training block instead of 16.

takes up a lot of time especially if your working full time have kids the secret to the long runs at the weekend is get up early 6am be done for 9am I do most runs on my lunch hour or i have a fantastic park I'll do them in the evenings find ways around it there is 24 hours in a day if u need to get earlier in the morning do it but I've marathon in April then I'll break for a few weeks the 1stbof July I'm back training for Amsterdam Dublin in October so it's a constant cycle but I love it gives me a focus and a goal and beauty to running your are only answerable to yourself and only racing against yourself

I started a 20 week marathon training block in middle of December then got flu that halted it a bit, gave the flu to my disabled step daughter who ended up in hospital on oxygen for 1st 2 weeks of new year but despite working and visiting etc still somehow kept it on track. At this point it was a secret and nobody knew of my intention and i was trying it to see if i could manage a marathon and wasn't even certain i was going to enter. Last saturday did an 18 mile long run and 35 miles total for week i think i mentioned it to wife maybe a few days before that(she knew i was up to something!). Tuesday i put entry in for a small local definately not flat marathon at end of April.I have only been running 2 years and at 49 years old this will be my first attempt so i am not pressuring myself with any time target but hopefully i can do it and not be last place. Training in terms of running is going ok but i must admit struggling a bit with s+c.

the best tip for marathon training is: Believe in the process.... and the 2nd one: marathon will be hard anyway 😆

Normally I enjoy training probably more than racing itself but, it's my first marathon training, week 5. Starting to struggle to find time for everything as the runs get longer. I work full time, study full time and have school age children

Scheduling has always been harder than any run for me.

It’s not about scaring people but you definitely have to know that it’s hard & some days you ask why. But I don’t think I’ve had a training program that hasn’t had those bad days/weeks. Currently on week 11 of 16 & it feels so much harder this time around. Don’t know if that’s just my body saying you’re now 40 & middle age 😂. I’ve also irritated my Achilles tendon. But I will ride the horse 🐎 😂.
I was thinking about the time commitment that it takes the other day. I do at least 2 a year plus half’s & 10k’s. But that’s 32 weeks out of the 52. But it’s worth it.
