11 Things About Landing Pilots Want You to Know

Landing is really rough sometimes. Also, everybody knows that the most critical times are landing and taking off. If you wanna ease or get rid of this fear, you should know how exactly a plane lands.

Why is landing often bumpy? (In fact, a rough landing has its benefits.) Why do pilots make a circle around the city before landing? Can an airplane land in strong crosswinds? These are just some of the most common questions about one of the most “interesting” parts of the flight. Let’s get them answered!

TIMESTAMPS:
Why do planes point up even when they’re flying down? 0:20
Why do pilots dim cabin lights during landing? 0:56
Do runway light patterns have a meaning? 1:26
Why do pilots sometimes dump fuel before landing? 2:00
Do planes really talk to pilots just before landing? 2:33
What do pilots call “the ground effect”? 3:06
Why is landing often bumpy? 3:41
Why is descent so long compared to takeoff? 4:16
Why do planes make a circle around the city before landing? 4:53
Why do they land sideways in strong crosswinds? 5:30
How do planes land in zero visibility? 6:53

I've landed a few times in my life. I never found it scary, but turbulence... I felt some one day and thought "the plane must have suffered some damage, right?" Great video!

No aircraft says “decide” its “minimums” and is manually Input by the pilots. Also decision height and decision altitude are two different figures.

pilot here. Most of these are not correct. For example. During decent you are nose down until about 50 (in a large jet) and then you flare to prevent the nose from hitting first and crumpling the nose gear. Also we will often go several legs on one batch of fuel in the a321 neo . It is not almost empty on every landing. Also, you do not practice cross wind landings at the beginning of you ppl. There is also no issue with visual approach and not being Lined up with the runway. We use instruments. we can do the entire approach and landing without even looking out the window.

The pilots DO NOT dim the lights for "energy". I don't know where you got that from, but it's just not true. The lights use such a small amount of energy, and the other functions of the plane are using the same amount of energy for the entire flight. There is no need for extra energy during landing.

Also, the plane does not say "decide", it says "minimums". I don't think there is a single plane that says "decide".

Ground effect does not happen in the last 15 seconds, it happens only within about a wingspan from the ground, meaning you will only really feel it in the last 3-4 seconds before landing.

The "approach" and a "Holding pattern" are two very different things. The approach is the procedure used to get to the runway. I holding pattern is a racetrack-shaped pattern that planes go into when they have to wait for further clearance.

During an approach in low visibility, the ATC is not a set of "extra eyes". Everything is just about the same for the Air Traffic Controller, and it's up to the pilots to land the plane properly.

Please, Bright Side, check your facts and stop just spewing nonsense about a topic you know nothing about.

Planes don't say (DECIDE) the planes say (APPROACHING MINIMUMS) Then (MINIMUMS) Great video!

The pitching up while landing is called flaring. This happens as the Commercial jets cant land with the nose pointed down
Smaller jets can though. The pitching up during descent helps slow the plane down and in case of a go around they are already pitching up so all they have to do is apply power which will allow the plane to start climbing
