4 ART TIPS THAT HAVE AGED WELL

Gay Holland, my professor at Frostburg State University, passed away earlier this year, and I've had it on my heart to create a piece honoring her. I think she'd be tickled to see her technique became something different in my life over the years; she never wanted a clone. :)

“Art takes as long as it takes.”
I love this so much.
Thank you, Sandy.

Yes, yes, yes about letting colored pencils shine on their own merits! Great video!

What wonderful advice! The best lesson I learned from my art professor was to see the beauty in imperfection, and to appreciate the hand of the artist.

Sandy, I love both these bee pictures! There's absolutely nothing wrong with the older version! The colours work really well together, each making the others 'alive'. The way you've coloured the flower gives it shape, and the highlights create the illusion of a curve so well that I feel that little insects can happily travel under and over them. The seed pattern also make it seem that the flower is smiling at giving its goodness to the bee and its protection of, and a playground for, the bugs.

And the bee himself? He fits perfectly into the beautiful simplicity of the whole concept. It's a piece of art which I would happily have on the wall of my studio, because it is so colourful, so fresh, in its simplicity, which speaks of a lot of work done and a wonderful instinct to be able to achieve this lovely, happy effect.

This is just a perfect illustration of so much that is lacking currently on ArtTube. Freshness, originality, good composition, glorious colour combinations. This, too, is something which AI (and a lot of ArtTubers!!!!) cannot replicate because it (and they) are slaves of the computer age.

As for the four 'advices'? Yes, to all four, but "Yes, yes!! "(no 1), and "Yes!" (no 2 - equally important, but more commonly talked about). "Yes, yes, yes!!!" (no 3) and "Yes, yes, yes!!!" (no 4) All four really matter, but this just gives my personal response to each.

*Thank <mega smiles!!! Can you feel the warmth? >

Wow! Gay's work is absolutely divine. Your high-school project is great. You obviously had a good start toward your art journey, even before college. Your professor would be pleased and impressed with your artwork and teaching skills.

What a wonderful video, paying tribute to someone who taught you and expanded your world of art. She's so right about time and effort. Think how long Leonardo da Vinci took painting the Mona Lisa. Thanks for sharing!

I’ve only just watched the intro, but it’s hard to imagine one better than your high school bee! You are fortunate in the support you received. My life was just the opposite. I loved art from the very beginning, but it was repeatedly pounded into my head that😊 I couldn’t make a career from art, so I wouldn’t receive the support that I would need for college, or even community classes. Fortunately, I had a wonderful extended family member who rented a room from us, and taught several venues. Whenever she had a free moment, my classes would begin. She also loved jig-saw puzzles, so when she sat down at the puzzle table, the art techniques or even art history would begin. She gave me her old supplies, and I used all of my allowance. Then I woue 😊.

I had a similar experience visiting the studio of Australian artist Vali Myers. I was frustrated with how long colored pencil drawings were taking me to finish. When I asked Ms Myers how long she takes to complete an artwork she said "As long as they take, if you rush anything you will live a life of regret and your art will have no real meaning in the world".

Apart from our parents, many people reflect on our teachers and professors having the greatest impact on our thinking and intellectual development. I've been lucky to have some exceptional teachers, and blessed to be able to teach many thousands of students over 16 years of teaching. This video is a wonderful homage to what sounds like a fantastic teacher, skilled artist, and interesting person. Thank you also for sharing Gay's books with us - they are just delightful!

That was very cool. Learned a lot watching the process and from your tips. But that story of getting to know such a talented illustrator so personally. That was beautiful.
