People need to understand, not all customs and culture need to be protected.

"We hang them and confiscate all their property" was probably the part that got him...

That was the perfect response if I've ever heard one.

This is the kind of answer that I think about in shower after a brutal argument.

Absolutely, the history of colonialism is filled with atrocities and using local peoples and destroying amoral, historical traditions, but there are also moments like this. History is complicated. Period. Don’t be one sided and blind in one eye when telling it. We need to know all of it.

Raja ram mohan roy started to raise voice against the sati practice. Out of millions/billions of hindu's in India sati cases were reported in almost 120-150, majority of which in west Bengal and with the help of british he banned this practice.
Hinduism never talked about sati, infact there are verses in hindu text with encourage marriage of widow.
Example:
Naradha smriti 12.97
Parashara smriti 4.28
Garuda purana 1.107.28
Agni purana 154.4-7

Wonder how many women were spared an absolutely horrendously painful end?

There's a pub in Blackburn Lancashire called the Sir Charles Napier. I don't know if Napier was from Blackburn though.
