A Welsh Prophecy Stolen by an English Kingdom, 1425 to 1542

The King Arthur legend came with a prophecy of a Welsh reconquest of Britain. This had been used by many Welsh rulers to gain or keep power. But after Owain Glyndŵr failed to win his national revolution, a new kind of ruler used this prophecy for his own gain, and at Wales' expense. This is real politik of the truest kind - whatever method that works to win the throne! In this video, we take a look at how this prophecy was used by England to nearly erase Wales from existence. This is part of a History Series based on the book When Was Wales? by Gwyn A. Williams.

I heard from a genealogist that the Welsh often switched sides, but, they had to do whatever they could to survive, if they hadn’t, I believe many more would have been slaughtered. It was a brutal history…. but the language has survived against all odds.

This effectively came true, as the Tudors rose to power in England and put the Britons on their enemies throne. The only problem was the fact that they never moved their power base back to Wales, and allowed for their descendants to became anglicised to the extreme. The annexation of Wales would never have come about had they all (Tudors) been born in Wales.

Interesting fact is that part of the reason king henry and his successor queen Elisabeth the 1st were so determined to get control over Ireland was that the Irish stood with the Yorkists in the war of the roses and they were worried that a Spanish fleet could be harbored in Ireland they would facing two powerful catholic fleets on either side of England ( the other is the French). Ireland was a serious threat back then not the little diminished colony that it would later become but a dangerous sovereign nation. I wonder what wales would have done in such a situation. They were pretty spilt up then with people fighting on both sides I wonder how they felt about the whole situation were they totally opposed to the Irish/Spanish that they would side with their English masters? or would some of them have stood with them should the Spanish have invaded from the backside seizing the opportunity for rebellion? We will never know but its fun to speculate.
