Social Security Disability SSDI Benefits for Blind, Legally Blind, and Visually Impaired

Matt talks about the social security administration definition of legal blindness in the United States and what qualifies you to receive social security disability (SSDI) benefits. He is not an expert and is just giving this information so you can speak to your doctor or do further research on your own to see if you qualify for benefits from having this disability.

Half and half: I’m legally blind in one eye and visually impaired in the other eye. I’m in the SSI lane

Hey Matt, I enjoyed the video. I'd like for you to talk about the differences between SSI and SSDI. This is a confusing point for a lot of people. Even with my visual impairment, I worked for 9+ years at a factory in an office. More than half of the plant was let go in 2017 and I was one of them. Since then, I have received SSDI.

Bravo for opening up this sensitive topic! You’ll probably mention these things in your upcoming videos but I think it’s important to note that it’s a long process that takes patience and persistence in a lot of cases. I was denied three times before finally being approved. The fourth time was the charm. I made an appointment to re-apply in person at my local Social Security office and that was so much better than trying to do it online with someone helping me or being on hold forever by phone. After that application it took about six months for my approval during which I had to go see one of their doctors and also a psychology appointment. So it’s a process but if you can get through it and do what they want it can be worth it. :-)

Hey Matt great video! I started receiving SSI from 2011-present. The abbreviation SSI is Supplemental Security Income. I started receiving SSDI in 2017. It is technically called Disabled Adult Child Survivor's benefits. My mother passed away when I was 8 years old. I started receiving those benefits right before I turned 25. I have never had a job and was told by someone who I thought was trying to help me to get on Social Security and that it would be the best thing for me. If you want to be low income your whole life than yes it is a great thing, but I am volunteering at a hospital for 1) To help others with tasks 2) To gain some job experience and 3) To possibly get a job so that way I can hopefully one day not have to rely on Social Security to pay me and I won't be low income anymore.

Matt, great video. I felt like I was sitting in a classroom. That's a compliment. You'd make a great teacher. I silently laughed as I tried to come up with ways I could use "Social Security Administration" and "slimy can of worms" together in a single sentence, like this video was an English composition class. I'm glad the federal government does not take you for granted. Naturally, I have to wonder about people whose acuity tests at 20 190, for example. I wonder if they just have to wait until they qualify. I liked the way you put your disclaimer in the video, like, I am not a Social Security attorney but I do know what I am talking about. You're awesome, Matt.

Hi Matt, well I think you did a phenomenal job opening up this can of worms. It is complicated and convoluted I guess as most all bureaucracies. The one thing I would re-phrase is that visually impaired and blind and or legally blind are all the same. In fact, it was the Social Security administration that created the criteria for someone being “legally blind“. They needed a cut off point to determine when a person is so, blind, that they would qualify for government monetary and even vocational Assistance. You can be visually impaired but not meet the definition of legal blindness and so the Social Security administration will probably deny your request. I think you have done an outstanding service to open up this topic because it is so confusing and the visually impaired population as a whole typically, has no idea, how to navigate this process. Hope you have a great week

Good video look forward to the rest of the series. Personally on Social Security myself and while it helps the system is a joke. I love that you added in the one, two hour hold time just to speak to someone. Very few realize how true this is

Hey Matt this is a very informative topic yes it's true not a lot of visually impaired people bring this up as a matter of fact I think visually impaired people can receive partial benefits while still employed however you are not required to work. If you're determined as being disabled due to visual impairment you will get benefits of course that is determined by SSA. Most of the time they will get information from your current eye doctor if that information is insufficient then they will send you to an opthamologist of their choice for a complete evaluation. I can say this for sure because I've had to do this a couple of times throughout my life. I've been getting benefits since my childhood I started getting them at age 4. At 3 months of age the eye doctor immediately knew there was something going on with my eyes when he noticed that they were constantly moving around so much that's another condition I have it is called Next Agnes it's an involuntary movement of the eyes. That condition alone does not make a person legally blind and less if the vision is affected to the point of having low visual Acuity under 20 / 200. I am legally blind under the rule of having a visual field at exactly 20 degrees. However my visual Acuity with corrective eyewear fluctuates anywhere between 20 / 200 and 20 / 160. And of course let's not forget I am completely blind in my right eye however I do want to say one more thing being blind and just one I will not make you eligible remember it's visual Acuity and visual field in the better eye with corrective eyewear. one last thing that I will finally say is when it comes to employment and Visually Impaired or blind although some blind people do have successful jobs but at other times employment can be difficult because of the fact that employers may be reluctant to hire you because they are concerned about liability issues safety issues and accommodations and you may not meet there job performance guidelines.
