Building the Sea Chart for Ocean Exploration!

Welcome to another devlog for Dauphin! In this episode I keep building the foundation for sailing by allowing the player easier access to their research vessel and ultimately building the rough draft of the Sea Chart, which the player will use to plot a course to a new destination. Hope you enjoy!

As I mentioned in the video, no support is needed for me to continue building Dauphin and creating videos! This is just an optional venue for those who want to go above and beyond. Thanks so much :)

Two devlogs in one month, I can hardly believe it myself! Feeling really excited about Dauphin right now and can't wait to see how it grows in 2021. Don't forget to drop a like if you're enjoying all the progress so far in the new year! Thanks so much for watching!

Every boss you uncorrupt should give you some sort of artifact. The artifact should display on the main Menu or something idk.

The underwater world in between the game and the code is just so relaxing and brings it all together!

The boat should go up and down simultaneously with the waves.

The way I like to show interactable objects is to add a white outline around them when you are close enough to interact. Simple, but works well!

You should definitely add the ability for players to craft furniture and chests and customize their cabins. You can then use this to make it so in the final game the way you get off tutorial island is by crafting a cartographer table.

The sheer amount of progress is amazing, that tank is clean af, good job little prawn dude.

Also, the game that guy keeps interrupting the prawn with looks pretty good, really shaping up to be a meditative experience. Might I suggest a wide variety of ambient noises, based on “biome” ie beach, cave, ocean.

Idea for the Sea Chart : The islands you haven't explored yet can show up on the sea chart as a plain outline of the island with say a big question mark over them, signalling to the player what islands they have been to already and what other islands there are to explore. The size, shape or color of the island could also tell the player whether the islands has a specific item/creature/boss etc. on it.
Really sick game btw.

Rest in peace Noodles.

Games looking amazing, the cabin looks very cosy and comfy. :) I like the addition of the plank.
Streams? Hell yeah! Youtube? Twitch? Wherever you choose I am sailing over :D

An idea I had for the navigation system is when you find a new organism, you’d be able to click on their name or icon and you could find out stuff about them, like if they can fly or if they’re aquatic, or if they do melee or ranged attacks, or if they’re bosses or not, or if they only show up under specific situations too name a few.
Just like some hints and facts for the species if I had to generalise it.

What makes these devlogs great is that I get to see progress and I learn something new. Every time, I get something out it and see it applied in your project. Very cool and keep up the awesome.

On the Worldmap, I would like to see an icon indicating the postion of my boat. Like on which Island I am currently located in relation to the others.

But as always a nice DevLog. Keep the good work up!

This may seem out of the blue, but one of the things I really appreciate about you is that you put the music credits in your descriptions. You always choose such comfy tracks that not only help make your videos cozy and familiar, but you provide ways to find the songs so I can play them throughout the day while I do my own development work. Good on ya.

I'm not sure if anyone has already suggested this. But for NPC dialogs, instead of displaying two bubbles (for the player and for the NPC), I think you could just display one bubble above the player's head, showing the NPC's face. This should work also when you have more than 1 NPC close to each other, as it will clearly show which NPC the player is about to start a dialog with.

Very nice indicators, goes along well with the theme of the game! Congrats on the Patreon Launch!

You may want to build out the interaction systems to support a multi-step UI. You are likely to find barriers created by the current design as the game grows more complex. For example, what if you are within range of two interaction objects at the same time? What happens if an object can be interacted with in more than one way? A simple solution to this is to have an menu wheel pop up. These could be thought bubbles that surround the player offering all potential actions.

So a player would press E to open the interaction wheel, if more than one object can be interacted with you choose a thought bubble to select that object as the target of interactions and this opens a final thought bubble wheel with the options for how you interact. This means you remove any design barriers long before you encounter them.
