Narinder Singh of Brampton, Ont., says he and his wife bought their condo apartment in Etobicoke as an investment for retirement.

“We worked for decades to save, penny by penny, for our old age,” said Singh, who runs a drycleaning business inside a Brampton supermarket.

But since 2020, Singh says the female tenant has paid only intermittently: he produced a ledger showing Deeqa Rafle owes $41,600 in back rent and $5,249.35 in unpaid utilities. In the meantime, she’s still living in Singh’s 32nd-floor apartment.

Global's Sean O'Shea has the details.

I have an idea. Any rent unpaid is deductible from your property tax. Government will be quick to change the rules 😂😂😂

The girl who hasn’t paid her rent for 4 years is a underwriter for a mortgage company. I can’t believe that!

I'm glad they showed and named these people... their families, friends, employers, etc. should be ashamed of them. CRIMINALS.

How the hell can't he evict her after owing more then 3 months rent. 41k is insane.

It's amazing how the government turns a blind eye on collecting $41, 000 debt when the victim is an ordinary citizen.
But won't allow you to renew your Driver's license to be able to drive if you have an outstanding $50 parking ticket from the city.

Imagine being featured in the news as a delinquent renter in that building. You neighbours now know you are a dead beat!

Why can’t we sue the Ontario Tenancy Board for delays in hearing? They should be held liable as much as the bad faith tenants…

This administration is putting many families in difficult situations. A lot of people are financially struggling to live, put a roof over their head and put food on the table. Things are getting worse these days, if you don't find means of multiplying your money you might wake up a day to realise you didn't plan well for yourself and family…

A Chinese lady launched a registry for bad tenants in Canada. Most of the data is pulled from BC Courts and Ontario LTB. If a landlord files paperwork about a bad tenant at the board, it will appear in the registry. Landlords can use it to vet prospective tenants. Its free. She created it after a bad experience she had on her rental property in Richmond, BC. She works in IT so pulled it together.

What’s the difference in stealing 41000 from a home owners or stealing 41000 of jewelry from a store in a mall?!?! This system is completely broken and supports the criminals

This crazy tenant playing the victim saying no family should have to go through this? Absolutely disgusting that this landlord can't throw her out

Wow these people should be blacklisted from every rental place.

This is criminal, Deeka Rafael should be in prison. Imagine stealing $41K from a bank or from a person, the law would be fully enforced. The system is broken. Why the government does not spend on speeding up these cases is baffling. They spend money on all sorts of other useless things. I hope you get justice Mr. Singh. Sue her for every dollar owed.

I am from Croatia. Couple years ago my friend had an apt he was renting out and suddenly the tenants decided to stop paying and wouldnt leave. He just went to one of those shaddy strip clubs found a couple thugs that were working there and hired them to scare the crap out of them by threatening them with their lives. 2 days later they were gone lol. Sometimes extreme measures are required. Whats better wait 5 yrs to finally evict someone or take matrer into your own hands.

No consequences means more crimes and corruptions.

Whoever made that law should be evicted from Canada.

What does the tenant's dead sister from more than a decade ago have to do with her not paying rent for 4 years?! It sounds like Ontario needs to seriously overhaul their landlord laws to give hardworking people like Mr. Singh more authority so that they're not waiting 4 years for rent checks!
