To Separate a Saltwater Mixture by Distillation

Показать описание
In this episode we will separate a mixture of sat and water by distillation. Distillation allows us to keep both the water and the salt from the mixture. Distillation is also commonly used to separate two liquids, e.g. water and alcohol.

AD,
Great question, you certainly put a lot of thought into it.
If the distillation was carried out the way I did it in the video then it would not remove everything from the water. For example if there was alcohol in the water this would boil at a lower temperature to the water and would therefore evaporate and condense before the water. If the distillation was continued then you would end up with water and alcohol together.

However if you know every contaminant in the water along with their boiling points then you could distil each contaminant separately. This would be very expensive and time consuming and you would still be left with all the contaminants.

In short distillation COULD remove everything from the water but you would still be left with all the contaminants regardless and not all contaminants are solids, many are liquids.

I have a science question: So, fracking companies take their waste-water and pump it deep into the ground to dispose of it. The wasterwater contains toxic chemicals that are contaminating the water wells of farms and homes.

Would it theoretically be possibly to distill the waste-water, leaving clean water and dry contaminants that could be more easily & smartly disposed of? I'm just not sure if the chemicals in the waste-water would be completely removed in the distillation process.

I guess the short questions would be; Does distillation always remove everything from water?

Question: Any particular reason why the cool water running through the condenser started at the bottom, not the top?

Hi I just came here for a school assignment but this was more interesting then accounted for. Just out of curiosity: What type of mixtures is distillation most helpful/best for?

very useful, even my chemistry teacher played this video in the class. this also helped me and a bunch of my classmates a lot to understand distillation, thanks for this video! :D

I didn't know that if you boil the water too fast, the steam will shoot through the liebig
condenser too quickly and it won't have time to condense down into water

i never knew that it actually saves the water

that really helps with my science exam, could you do an experiment on chromatography?

Is it correct that evaporation is part of distillation? and will it not happen without the process of evaporation?
