I enjoyed this more than the much longer "How Norman Knights Conquered Arab Sicily", your competitor. You got down the main facts and the 'real politik' of this conflict. Music, good graphics and maps MATTER in this venue. Great job.

Another great video but only one minor correction if you will. The byzantine general George Maniaces finally left Italy not to surpress rebellions in the empire but he was in rebellion himself, after the new emperor confiscated his lands and his wife was raped. Maniaces was the best byzantine general of his time and as you can imagine large part of the army supported him and crowned him Basileus. In the ensuing battle against the Imperial forces he was winning but as fate would have he was killed seemingly just as the imperial forces were going to collapse, in fact during the chase.

Something also worth pointing out. After the Normans revolted Maniaces briefly returned to Italy capturing many cities and severely threatening the revolt when the events mentioned above happened. His rival Romanos Skleros with the support of Emperor Constantine Monomachos raided his lands and raped his wife which marked the start of his rebellion.

Many of the southern Italian nobility trace their descent from the Normans who went south -including the previous queen Paola of Belgium who was part of the Calabrian noble family of the Rufos (Rufus meaning "red."

As she returned in triumph to the castle, she was overtaken by a messenger, to inquire, in the name of Theobald, what punishment should be inflicted on her husband, were he again taken in arms. “Should such, ” she answered without hesitation, “be his guilt and misfortune, he has eyes, and a nose, and hands, and feet. These are his own, and these he may deserve to forfeit by his personal offences. But let my lord be pleased to spare what his little handmaid presumes to claim as her peculiar and lawful property.” History of the decline and fall of the Roman empire.

By the way modern Italians are a mixture of: Romans + Germanic Tribes (Lombards, Ostrogoths, Herulos and Normans).
