In this video I take a deep dive in to see if the desk view can actually work like how apple showed in the WWDC 2022 demo. The Desk view is a new feature that comes with the continuity camera in the macOS Ventura.

What are your thoughts on this Desk View feature?

It's using the cameras separately. The supported phone models all have 2 cameras minimum, one of them being ultrawide. In your test, so many things are wrong... The phone is far too far away from the laptop's display, which alone blocks the view of the ultrawide. Next, you have your display "leaned back" in that it's too far open, which increases the distance between it and the desk as well as angling the phone upwards. In the official examples, and an example I found of someone else on YouTube trying it, the display is set straight upwards, a 90 degree angle from the base of the laptop. The view you get from the ultrawide in the viewfinder is likely a cropped image to fit the wide display of the screen, I think the true capture is likely closer to a square and you might be able to see it if you changed the aspect ratio in the settings. When you tilted the phone, you also raised it up at the same time, which fights against the angle change. Finally your phone case that you're trying to capture is not at desk height, it is lower, far below the touchpad of the laptop, again blocking it from view.

The camera can see wider than your viewfinder on video mode, try with photo mode and u can see it’s already wider, even with that mode it is still cropped for what the camera actually sees

Dude good for effort u put in the video but you didnt do a good review of that. You literally put the iPhone behind the laptop and also the case is under the laptop, even a human cant see it. I tested desk view and it works, you have to move the iPhone a little bit more down like you said but it still will catch your desk and also the face through using Center Stage.

I guess it's cute that you're trying to guess at how it might work using an iPhone mounted behind a PC laptop. But that's not at all how this actually works.

I'm running it on Ventura with an iPhone 13 clamped to the lid of a MacBook Air. It's pretty amazing. It's exactly as advertised.

The phone should be mounted to the laptop's lid, not behind it. Using a separate tripod wasn't a good testbed.

Seems impossible, but here’s my idea which might barely work, Portrait ultra-wide, or a bigger desk, or a laptop stand.

haha.. i thought you are going to unlock the magic. That's a breakthrough software technology going on from Apple Mac OS now. Still Thanks for showing how remarkable solution Apple is going to show the world. It is not just plain simple hanging a phone on the hinge.

this test wasnt too good please try again properly, you used the ultra wide camera in video mode which is significantly cropped compared to in picture mode, and apple can bypass this crop and use it in its full ratio which we can see in all examples it looked like 3 by 4 not 16 by 9 ect
