Spent 2 years in Ashgabat and it’s definitely an interesting place. The thing about the roads though is only partly true. There are certain roads that are empty, but because they lead out of the city and away from everything. The rest of the city can be quite crazy with traffic, and yes, all white cars. The government isn’t a fan of outsiders, whether it’s diplomats or even their own people from outside of Ashgabat. The people there are super nice too. Great food, interesting culture, but the government is crazy. Fake elections, people doing serious jail time for ridiculous things, Covid was referred to as dust particles, and surprisingly a fun night life. Also the country is obsessed with Akon, so that’s a thing haha

About the gates of hell, it was originally a hole dug during the Soviet era in search of resources, but they stumbled across a natural gas chamber which made things dangerous.
